Homeward Stake Down - May 1-3 |
Homeward Stake Down, an arts and action campout of homeless participants and supporters, will be held May 1 through May 3 in downtown Sacramento at 12th and C Streets. The public is invited to join in the day and early evening activities that will include educational workshops, hands-on art projects, speakers, get togethers, poetry, art and photography displays, and performances by local musicians.
This event will provide a safe and stable place for the homeless participants to sleep for the three nights, to rest and unwind from the stresses of having to find hidden sleeping places and being constantly on the move to avoid camping citations. It will also provide a relaxing and open atmosphere where those that are not homeless can join with those that are homeless into one community of shared, enriching experiences. These connections often result in bringing help and resources to those most in need. Event will highlight the Homeward Street Journal and Safe Ground Sacramento's prototype sleeping cabin. Weekend Retreat - Skillful Compassion - June 13-15 |
June 13-14-15, 2014
Presenters
Barbara Lawrence
Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P.
Based on Karen Armstrong's work, as reflected in her Compassion Project, this weekend retreat will explore the dynamic of compassion from an interfaith perspective. We will have ample opportunities to explore the spirituality of compassion as we become aware of our own personal need for compassion. In fact, the more compassionate we are to ourselves, the more compassionate we become in the presence of others. Through directed meditation, deep study, honest reflection, and the practice of mindfulness, we will rejoice together in the development of our personal practice of skillful compassion. Karen Armstrong's book, The Twelve Steps of Compassion, will serve as a major guide for our weekend retreat.

From the President's Desk | |
ICGS President Jon Fish writes:
Two key events in the lives of the Interfaith Council unfold in the next six weeks. The Power of One annual dinner and awards takes place on May 15. This has literal meaning, recognizing the power of one person who has stretched and reached out to make life better for others. We have four wonderful recipients this year and we expect a wonderful turn-out and a delightful evening of musical entertainment, the spoken word, good food and brotherhood/sisterhood in a setting of coming together in all of our different faiths. And, secondly, we hold our annual meeting in early June. There we set our board members, go over plans for the coming year, break bread together and speak to what we accomplished in the previous year. We invite all of you to attend with us and details are outlined in the newsletter this month. Peace to all.
