THE FISHING CORNER
If there is a constant about fishing, it might be that there just doesn't ever seem to be enough time to fish, as much as we'd like to. Gazing down from the deck in front of the outfitting store often give me the proverbial "horse with the dangling carrot" feeling. So close, but so far! What to do? Learn to fish at night....spend more time ice fishing!

Though I'm always looking forward to the next fishing date, I can tell you that ice fishing has been pretty good this winter. Early winter walleye success was a good way to help keep the "bug" in check. Now that the walleye season is closed until spring, the focus get shifted to panfish and trout, whose "season" remains open until the end of March. Hopefully there will be good reports to come but one thing remains constant, there's still not enough time to fish as much as we want.

Minnesota Fishing!

New for 2015!

The State of Minnesota DNR has relaxed the "catch and release" smallmouth bass season for part of the state. For all of northeast Minnesota (east of Rt 53 and north of Duluth), smallmouth bass will remain a regular limit in the fall (after the second Saturday of September). That is, 6 smallmouth or largemouth bass (or combined) can be kept, with no size restrictions, per licensed individual. Prior to this year, all smallmouth bass were required to be released starting on the 2nd Saturday of September.

Minnesota's new youth fishing licenses are a hit..and why not. A non-resident license for youth (age 16 & 17) that entitles them their own limit and exempts them from a trout stamp, has now been available for a couple years at a cost of just $6.

A new link will be posted as soon as the 2015 fishing regulations become available.

Ontario Fishing Licenses

The Prairie Portage Ranger Station will continue to sell fishing licenses next year. At times there where minor delays at the station but nothing serious. To save time though, we would still highly recommend buying your Ontario Fishing Licenses on-line. Follow the appropriate link to the right of this section.

We'll keep you posted of any regulation changes when and if they occur.

PERMITS

We're back in our preseason format on permit reservations. That means Quetico Park permits are available no sooner than 5 months, to the day, ahead of the actual start date and Boundary Waters permits are now available for reservation on a 1st come 1st serve basis.

Weekends (Sundays & Mondays) and mid summer starts (July 15th- August 15th) are prime times, so reserve your permits early for prime time dates. Remember, we're happy to reserve permits or check availability for our guest.

Coming to a Wilderness Near You!

Ok....so maybe that's not entirely accurate. Maybe it should say...Getting to a Wilderness Near You!

The fact is, getting a Canoe Country adventure into the schedule has become pretty easy in the last several years. Yes, there are still "Prime Times" that fill up as in the past (and probably for the foreseeable future) but the once elusive permits of, say, the mid-90's... are a lot easier to come by these days.

There are reasons for this. The biggest of reasons, in my opinion, might be today's culture. That is to say, there are so many different influences affecting folks today, that wilderness adventure travel is just one choice of many for people to choose from. Hectic schedules certainly limit the frequency of doing specific things. Kids today are involved in so many things that it's hard to figure out when they sleep. Life is in constant flux, whether it's socially, in school or in the work place. Getting the family or friends all on the same page has become one of the biggest challenges to taking that wilderness adventure. This has caused the demand for permits to level off in the last several years.

Some things regarding canoe trips have become costly but what hasn't? Wilderness canoe trips are still a great value in the grand scheme of things.  I think the experience and memories made are priceless, anyway! For many of our guest, current and past, reaching the Canoe Country is a moderate to easy day of travel.

We receive many inquiries this time of the year asking if there are any openings left. There was a time when, if you didn't reserve your Quetico Park permit before the 1st of February, you weren't getting one unless someone else cancelled. Boundary Waters permits were often just as tough to get. The fact is, there are still LOTS of openings. If you combine that with just a little flexibility in one's schedule, it's hard not to find openings.

The bottom line here is that there's plenty of opportunities to get a wilderness canoe trip in this year. We can check dates for you and we would be glad to help make it happen. Just give us a call!

Around the Base
Subtle...Yet Glaring!

It might be because there isn't too much going on up here right now, but if you live in the Northwoods, you just notice little things. It starts out almost indiscernible. The thermometer says -26˚ but there's a drip of water coming from the roof! The subtle daily increase of the sun's angle is barely enough to heat the shingles at the edge...enough to actually melt some snow.

Driving home between Duluth and Ely last weekend,  it was still light...it was quarter to 6:00pm, not 4:30!

What's going on in the woods? Well up here, owls are starting to nest and gray jays are thinking about it. Eagles won't be on nests for a while but they're already on nests down state. Check this out: Eagle Cam (Twin Cities)

In a few weeks the tame flocks of pine grosbeaks will start heading north with the spring. Pine grosbeaks are strictly a winter resident around these parts, that most canoe trippers never get to see.

Yeah, I know...there's still a lot of winter left to enjoy but it's always fun to think of spring as being just around the corner!
