THE FISHING CORNER
Sometimes you just need to see some proof...

Here is a small sampling of some 2014 success... courtesy of the Boundary Waters, the Quetico Park and the folks that caught 'em!

We hope you'll consider being part of the 2015 success stories yet to be written!

Dave

We'd love to share your pictures through our newsletter...fishing or otherwise. Just e-mail in a small format.

Thanks!

Minnesota Fishing!

New Minnesota fishing regulations usually come out in mid to late winter. While no major changes are anticipated, we'll keep you informed if any big changes DO take place.

Minnesota's new youth fishing licenses are a hit..and why not. A non-resident license for youth (age 16 & 17) that entitles them their own limit and exempts them from a trout stamp, has now been available for a couple years at a cost of just $6.

A new link will be posted as soon as the 2015 fishing regulations become available
Ontario Fishing Licenses

The Prairie Portage Ranger Station will continue to sell fishing licenses next year. At times there where minor delays at the station but nothing serious. To save time though, we would still highly recommend buying your Ontario Fishing Licenses on-line. Follow the appropriate link to the right of this section.

We'll keep you posted of any regulation changes when and if they occur.

PERMITS

We're back to our preseason format on permit reservations. That means Quetico Park permits are available no sooner than 5 months, to the day, ahead of the actual start date and Boundary Waters permits are available for application starting in mid December. All BWCA permits become available first come first serve in late January.

Weekends (Sundays & Mondays) and mid summer starts (July 15th- August 15th) are prime times, so reserve your permits early for prime time dates. Remember, we're happy to reserve permits or check availability for our guest.

Williams and Hall Newsletter
What's Going On in the North Woods.
This news letter is designed to help keep you current on the issues of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico Provincial Park, to give you information on Williams and Hall Outfitters, and to share some of our knowledge and love of the outdoors and the wilderness around us.  We hope you enjoy these articles and share them with your friends.

And That's a Wrap!

The Tamaracks are golden and the last of the leaves are barely hanging on now! The loons have turned to their fall gray colors and some have headed to the Gulf and Atlantic coasts for the winter. The remaining ones won't be too far behind. The hearty Northwoods residents that stay, are stocking up for the winter.

We've wrapped up yet another season in the Canoe Country and now set our sights on next spring. There's plenty to do and enjoy in a Northern Minnesota winter for us but it's fun to look back at our memorable summer past. First and foremost, we thank each and every one of our guests that visited and vacationed with us this year.

This past season started much like the previous one, with a late ice out and plenty of water. We rarely got hot for any long stretch of time, had plenty of timely rain and actually wound up having a summer without a single fire restriction or ban. Fall gave us a truly fantastic show, both in colors and duration.

Three things that seem to stick in my mind from this past season were the high water...long into the season, the terrific blueberries & raspberries and some truly large northern pike.

All in all, it's been another successful year and we thank you again. Before you know it, the last of the snow will be melting away and canoes will be floating again. It's never to early to start thinking about your next canoeing adventure.

Around the Base
I always find it fascinating to watch the activity with the wildlife as fall wanes and winter approaches. Weather it's the giant feed pile in front of a beaver lodge as they stock up, the signs of whitetail deer or moose coming into the rutting season or just a chipmunk with cheeks like balloon full of food (probably looking to hide it somewhere in my garage), I'm impressed none the less.

One Boundary Waters local that has figured me out, however, is the Gray Jay (alias; Canada Jay, Whiskey Jack and Camp Robber).  A pair that lives near my house has two or three young ones each spring. They hang around for a while getting readily available handouts (from yours truly) and seemingly vanish for the summer. Long about early-mid September, the young of the spring (fully grown now) return to the scene of the "freebies". And now, instead of me treating them to an easy meal, they're showing up at the living room window demanding (by tapping on the glass) said handouts! Some nerve!

Lesson number one...well intended handouts can easily become a Gray Jay's unintended entitlement if one's not careful!

Quetico Park- The Ontario MNR has now made fishing licenses available on-line! To purchase Ontario fishing licenses you can click on the following link: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/STDPROD_091032.html/

Purchasing Ontario fishing licenses on-line proved to be an easy alternative to attempting a purchase at Prairie Portage last summer. We'll continue to advise Quetico fishermen and women to purchase on-line for this year.

Ontario Parks permits (including Quetico Park) will continue to be available on-line for the 2013 season: https://reservations.ontarioparks.com/Quetico/Backcountry?Map

Boundary Waters- While Minnesota fishing licenses are still available here at Williams and Hall, they can also be purchased on-line at: https://jc.activeoutdoorsolutions.com/mn_customer/app/goHome.do

As in the past few years, Boundary Waters permits are also available on-line at: http://www.recreation.gov/unifSearchResults.do?topTabIndex=Search
