| A Move Towards a Universal Charging Format |
|
In Europe, major producers of mobile phones have agreed in a Memorandum of Understanding ("MoU") to harmonise chargers for data-enabled mobile phones sold in the EU. The industry commits to the provision of compatible chargers on the basis of the Micro-USB connector. The standard was developed in Feb 2011 and new phones being released come with this charger.
14 companies have signed the MoU including Apple, Nokia, Research In Motion (RIM) and Samsung. Together, the 14 brands represent more than 90% of the mobile phones sold in Europe today.
Whilst the MoU applies to EU Member States, the technical specifications are being discussed to facilitate the adoption of a common charger in world markets.
