The days of our life are seventy years,
or perhaps eighty, if we are strong.
So teach us to count our days
that we may gain a wise heart.

New Member Sunday
June 1
(This Sunday!)

Please join us for worship on Sunday as we extend an extravagant welcome to new members as they join our faith community at Zion.

From the Pastor's Desk

I remember a time (not too long ago!) that many in this community did not think Zion Church would survive as a place of worship. Membership and attendance had dwindled.  Giving had evaporated. There seemed to be little hope of survival as a faith community.

But we have endured.  Membership is growing.  We are paying our bills on time (with even a little left over to help the poor).  Fighting for justice.  Actively engaged in mission. How did this happen in a relatively short period of time?  Maybe our texts for this week help us to gain some understanding as to how this happened; how we emerged from darkness into the light.

After Jesus withdrew from his disciples and was carried up to heaven, our text says "and they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple blessing God". Luke 24:52 NRSV  And later, in subsequent days, we read and hear that and an early faith community was "praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number".  Acts 2:47 NRSV

I guess that's how it happened then and how it still happens today.  When children of God gather together and give thanks and praise God's gift of love they will have the goodwill of all the people.  In other words, worship, and they will come.

And really, isn't that what worship is.  Giving thanks and praise in ways that welcome others to share in all of God's glory and all that God has done for us.

That feels like Zion to me and what a joy that we welcome others into our covenant fellowship on Sunday.  Please be with us to extend an extravagant welcome to those who will join us. "And day by day the Lord added to their number".

Please Welcome TOPS to Zion

Please welcome members of TOPS to Zion.  Beginning in June, they will be holding their weekly meeting in the Fellowship Hall at Zion.  TOPS stands for "take off pounds sensibly".  TOPS was established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success.  The organization exists in many communities.  They have helped millions of individuals live healthier lives. Welcome to Zion!
