This Week at Zion
From the Pastor's Desk

The picture above shows the stained glass window adorning the eastern wall of our sanctuary at Zion.  It is so beautiful. It portrays, as you know, Jesus "in the garden".  I captured this particular photograph of the window during a late spring morning earlier this year as I was struck by how, as the sun was rising, the details of the face of Jesus were ceded to the sun.  It was as if the very mind of Christ was shining and radiating before me.  So, I took the picture.

The mind of Christ is clearly and unequivocally set out in this week's focus text which we find in the twelfth chapter of Luke.  Jesus says, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." (Luke 12:15 NRSV).  Jesus is suggesting, perhaps, that the wealth esteemed in this world does not constitute the essence of life; at least not the abundant life offered by God.  Rather, Jesus says, "those who store up treasures for themselves . . . . are not rich toward God."  (Luke 12:31 NRSV).

Pablo Picasso is reported to have said these words; "I'd like to live as a poor man with lots of money."  As much as I like his art, I think Picasso's sentiment is misdirected.  To verbally capture the "mind of Christ" and to be "rich toward God", I would reshape Picasso's quote in these words; "I'd like to live as a rich man, with no money".  It is not money or possessions which constitute the wealth of an abundant life.  A wealthy life is constituted by living in ways that are "rich toward God".

We will investigate on Sunday what this notion might mean to each of us during our faith journey together.

Hope to see you in the pews!

In Christ,

Pastor Pete

VBS and Project
SHARE

We are deeply indebted to our children at Zion for showing us how to help our neighbors in a meaningful way. As many of you know, we have vulnerable members of our Delaware community who live without shelter. They live on our streets.

For the second year, the children of Zion have supported Project SHARE by gathering supplies and assembling packages of toiletries and other necessities into health kits for those served by this meaningful project.  We understand at the Zmail that our children made 33 complete health kit bags this year and included pictures and notes created by our children.  There were also a lot of additional items (soaps, etc) donated as well.
The cards in the photo above were made by Liz White.  Below, Jason White is putting some toothpaste into one of the health kits.

Thank you children and thank you Zion for responding to this important need within our community.

"From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded."

Luke 12:48 NRSV
Piano Needs a Home

Please help us find a home for the upright piano which is resting in the elevator entrance of the church.  Ernee tells us the piano plays well.  We simply do not have any use for it at Zion.

If you know of anyone who would like the piano, please let one of our Ministers of Property know (MOP - Cheryl, Shirley, Mike, Peter, Bob or Jason).

SCHOOL SHOE PROGRAM

Once again, People In Need (PIN) is sponsoring the School Shoe Program. This program supports low to middle income children attending Delaware County schools.

The program provides a $25.00 gift card to Payless Shoe store to each qualified student.

PIN depends upon community donations to support this program. The program fund-raising begins on July 15th and runs through the end of August. During last year's program PIN purchased 516 pairs of shoes at a cost of $12,900.

Please prayerfully consider whether you are able to support this program and a donation to this worthy cause. Thank you.
