Widening the Welcome Not too long ago in this column I talked about the Widening the Welcome initiative within the United Church of Christ. It is on my mind again this morning as I write this column.
Last Sunday during worship, a member of our congregation stood to share with us his news that he had recently been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. His words were filled with emotion at a revelation in his life that had answered many questions for him, his wife, his family and his friends. I was moved beyond belief as I heard his words.
Twenty of my sermons could not replicate or convey the power of his message. His words for us were simply this; he had found a welcoming home of worship at Zion United Church of Christ. He had found a place of worship that did not cast judgment and that had welcomed him into Christ's Body unconditionally.
It is one thing to say that All are Welcome at Zion. It is easy to say that we are a place of worship that practices extravagant hospitality. We say we are changing lives. Are we?
What a strong and compelling witness to God's presence in our lives to hear such an intimate representation of those realities in a person's life.
That fills me with joy. It also fills me with hope; hope that we can live into God's promise of abundant life for all of God's children.
No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome at Zion.
In Christ,
Pastor Pete
