Spring Cleanup A Success!!

Well, our time together last Saturday was well spent.  Pulling weeds, spreading mulch, tearing down old structures, and replanting perennials were some of the tasks we applied our efforts to.  The church grounds haven't looked this good in many, many years.

Many thank to all who turned out to spruce up the grounds!!  In the near future, the parsonage and garage will be demolished and a new tool shed will be constructed.  The new "profile" of Zion will enhance the presence of our church on the block it has occupied for nearly a century.
From the Pastor's Desk

It is hard to imagine that so much pain and sorrow could enter one person's life.  That is always my first thought when I think of the life of Horatio Spafford.  The thought was brought home to me yesterday as I heard the news the daughter of a fellow pastor had died after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Spafford is best known as the author of the much loved hymn, It Is Well With My Soul.  Spafford's life was full of tragedy.  He lost significant resources in the great Chicago Fire.  He was further devastated by the great economic recession of 1873.  His first born, a son, died at an early age.  Perhaps the single largest tragedy in his life was the loss of four daughters when the ship they were traveling on to England was sunk after a collision with another vessel.  It was this tragedy that prompted his writing of the famous hymn we all know.

How can it be well with our soul when a life holds so much hardship?  How can we find peace? "My peace I give to you" Jesus says in this week's gospel lesson from the Gospel of John. Finding peace in Christ in the midst of the sufferings of the world is what Spafford testified he had found in his faith, in Jesus Christ.  "When sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thous hast taught me to know, it is well with my soul."

While our losses may not be of the scope of the events of Spafford's life, they are equally impactful for each us.  How do we find peace?  How do we cope with our suffering?  That will be our reflection this Sunday.  I hope you can be with us as we share Holy Communion with each other in remembrance of the one who brings peace to our lives.

Free Summer Lunch Program

Once again this year, Andrews House is partnering with the Woodward Family Resource Center and Delaware City Schools to offer the Free Summer Lunch Program. Volunteers are critical to making this program successful. Without volunteers, this important summer program would not be possible.

Last summer, Zion volunteers were an important part of the volunteer force. We plan to be onsite again this summer.  Please help if you can. Last year, we selected one day a week which was "Zion Day" at Woodward.

Beginning June 3, 2013 and running through August 2, 2013, a free lunch will be offered to anyone, ages 18 and younger, who shows up under the covered part of the playground at the Woodward Elementary school between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm.

For more information, please contact Pastor Pete or one of our Ministers of Mission (Mike, Nancy or Konrad). Thanks in advance for your help and support. It is really appreciated!

Volunteers will help with such things as setting up and tearing down the lunch tables, opening difficult to open items, keeping the lunch tables clean, conducting lunch counts, sanitizing hands, and on Fridays, passing out backpacks full of food for the weekend. Volunteers are also needed to do activities with the children. Last year Pastor Pete brought his guitar and sang with the children.  Lunch setup begins around 11:30 and cleanup is usually completed by 1:15.

What's Happening?

May 3.   TODAY!  There will be an ecumenical Church Women United luncheon at First Presbyterian Church on May 3.  This year it will be a covered dish luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m.  We sure hope Zion will be represented at this luncheon.  Who's interested in representing our church at the luncheon?

The program is an update presentation on The Family Promise House (a special project for many at Zion!)

This is a wonderful gathering of women in Delaware! Please come and bring a friend.

July 15, 16, 17, and 18.  Vacation Bible School at Zion (VBS).  VBS will be held on these days each afternoon. Watch for more details to follow in bulletins and Zmails. See Carrie Abahazi if you would like to assist in the planning and preparations.

Mobile Food Market.  Eagles parking lot. Can you help?
Assistance is always needed to help serve families in need the fresh produce provided to us by the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Zion has been a lead partner in this relatively new venture and it has been a great success. Over 200 families are served on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month.  Work begins at 11:30 and we conclude by 1:00.

Please plan to be with us if you are able.

Guest Children's Moment

Please consider volunteering to deliver a Children's Moment sermon during a Sunday worship service in the near future.

On the first Sunday of each month, a "guest" will join the children at the front of the sanctuary.  Here's a scene from a recent Children's Moment during which Sharon Patterson had all of the children of Zion Church demonstrating the finest in hat ware.  As you can tell by their expressions, they were enjoying themselves.  Let Pastor Pete know if you have any interest in sharing with the children during an upcoming service.  Nikol Stout will be delivering the Children's Moment sermon this Sunday. Thank you Nikol!

Feed the WOW Wagon!!

In April we had another very successful collection; 67   pounds of food and other items donated on behalf of Zion to People In Need (PIN).  We say "keep doing what you're doing" and we will handily exceed our goal of 1,000 pounds in 2013. Currently, we have collected 325 pounds!

Our newest addition to the PIN family, the WOW (Wheels of Warmth) Wagon, awaits your donation at the rear of the sanctuary.  Fill up the WOW Wagon!  She is quite empty! As we start a new month, let's make her smile and fill her up!  Please be cautious when donating liquid items! Make sure lids are screwed on tightly. Thank you.

A list of the most needed food and taxable items are posted on the sanctuary bulletin board. Most needed food items include canned meats, canned fish, and, always the popular favorite, peanut butter.  Most needed taxable items include toothpaste, shampoo, laundry detergent, bar soap and diapers.
