Christian Offerings

In one of the earliest Christian writings describing worship practices (150 C.E), Justin Martyr shared with us the components of an early Christian worship service. In his First Apology, he set out how such a service would proceed.

It is clear, from his writing, that from the very early days of our faith tradition, supporting those in need was a vital part of our calling as Christians.  This is an excerpt from that writing:

"And they who are well to do, and willing, give what each thinks fit; and what is collected is deposited with the president, who supports the orphans and widows and those who, through sickness or any other cause, are in want, and those who are in bonds and the strangers sojourning among us, and in a word takes care of all who are in need."

It was in this same spirit that, on Monday, Zion volunteers gathered with other community members in a parking lot on the east side of Delaware to support those in need within this community.  On that day, we welcomed a semi tractor/trailer full of fresh produce as it pulled into the parking lot.  This was on the advent of Delaware's first Mobile Food Market.  The MidOhio Food Bank provided the fresh produce and volunteers were on hand to staff and support the effort.

At the end of the day, 110 families came to receive part of God's bountiful harvest.  Among the items distributed were potatoes, onions, eggs, grapes, apples, yogurt, cucumbers, sweet potatoes and bread.  I think I can safely say the recipients of this support were pleased we were on hand to extend a helping hand.

The Mobile Food Market will occur the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month.  Our thanks to Team Zion members Erin, Emily, Kellye, Nancy, Konrad, Andy, Marty, and Anthony for making this event such a success.  If you are able and willing to help at future markets, please let Konrad or myself know of your interest.

In Christ,

Pastor Pete

Pastor's Match for Andrew's House

December 30 has been designated by Church Council as this year's Pastor's Match Sunday.  This continues a tradition started last year by Pastor Pete and Melissa to match the amount of offering given on the last Sunday of the year during worship and to forward the entire amount to Andrews House.  As you know, we are a community partner with Andrews House (see story above) and our covenant agreement provides for the sharing of our treasure to the extent we are able.  Thank you for helping in this important and significant effort.
