From the Pastor's Desk
Let's Party!!
This only happens once. We will celebrate a significant milestone in the history of Zion Church on Sunday; 175 years as a faith community in Delaware. In many ways it is a gift to each of us be able to witness to this memorable moment. We have been given the opportunity, on behalf of our predecessors and on behalf of those who will follow, to gather and say thank you for a safe and welcoming place to worship.
So please, honor those who are traveling great distances to be with you to celebrate on this day. So please, honor those who have gone before us and who made sacrifices that we might worship in this wonderful place. So please, honor the history of our faith tradition by being present twice on Sunday; once for worship and once for our "birthday party". I am expecting you to be present twice. I sincerely hope that you will be.
This event points to the future just as it celebrates the past. "It is hard to know where we are going" as a church "if we don't know where we have been". I suspect our founders would be surprised (shocked?) to see today's liturgy. Mystified to hear our music. But that is as it should be. A dying church is a growing church; dying to some elements of the past while maintaining a strong and faithful bond with tradition and growing as a result. Not only is God still speaking; God's Spirit is calling us to new pursuits and new directions that are faithful to our tradition.
Our future holds fast to extravagant hospitality and the radical love of Jesus Christ. That part of who we are has probably not changed too much over the years and that, also, is reason to celebrate.
I can't wait to spend Sunday with you. Get ready to party!!
In Christ,
Pastor Pete

Zion is really going to the dogs...
There were a lot of "joyful noises" at Zion last Sunday as 9 dogs, 2 cats & one jumping spider joined us for the Animal Blessing during worship.

Delaware CropWalk
Thank you Team Zion for turning out in full force for the annual CropWalk. It was chilly but our hearts were warmed by being in fellowship with others fighting world hunger. Team Captain, Mike, reports we raised a tidy sum to feed hungry bodies and hungry spirits. Thank you Kellye, Sarah, Laurie, Melissa, Chad, Bill, Konrad, and Mike for battling the elements.
