Would you like to host a member mixer at your business? You can partner with another member (or two) to host a mixer!  The PWN Board of Directors is looking for members to host networking mixers! These informal mixers are a way for PWN members, new and seasoned, to learn more about each other's businesses in a fun, casual setting. You don't have to do this alone...ask another PWN member to host a mixer with you. If this opportunity sounds interesting and you would like to host a mixer, let's get started...It's as easy as 1-2-3!

1) Contact Laurie Bend, 2016 Communications Chair, to select a date/time to host your mixer.
2) Invite your contacts to attend and offer a light snack and beverage for all to enjoy.
3) Make connections, network and have fun while attendees learn about your business.

Sound simple? It is! All you need is the willingness to host the mixer, choose a date, invite PWN members, your contacts, colleagues and friends to attend, and provide light snacks during the mixer. PWN will help get the word out about the mixer through our eBlasts, Facebook page and the PWN website! Dates are available in July and August. Don't delay...contact Laurie Bend, lbend@pageonedesign.biz to get started.

Want to get more involved in PWN and have fun? Find out how you can become the PWN Mixer Chair and help organize these exciting member mixers. Contact Laurie for details!
Board Member Highlight

Julie Ahearn - President

Persistence! This is the key attribute that Julie Ahearn, our PWN President, recommends in order to succeed in business. Never give up, no matter what, and trust in yourself. Her life is an example of these truths.

True Idea Productions and Photography grew out of Julie's lifetime of experience in film, video and photography.  Photography was a calling from early in life, although she also thought about being an architect and a fashion designer. In high school she started making films and went onto major in Broadcast Journalism in college.  After working at TV stations and production companies she was brought to the Monterey Peninsula to work on a project with the Navel Postgraduate School.  That was followed by freelance work and then in 2010 she started her current business.

True Idea Productions is a video production company.  Julie will translate your story into powerful video that not only connects you with your client, but also has them come back for more.  In addition, she specializes in headshot photography that allows you to not only make a great first impression, but always a great impression.  In both video and photography, your uses can vary from broadcast, to website, to social media and to the Internet.  Go to her website www.TrueIdeaProductions.com for examples of her work and more information.  Julie would love to work with you!

As our 2016 PWN President Julie's goal for this year is that every member of PWN realizes the value of this organization for themselves and for the growth of their business. In her experience as an entrepreneur the hardest part is always breaking the barriers of her own comfort zone.  Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable has allowed her business to grow because opportunities present themselves when you are present to see them.  PWN is one of these opportunities. She shares that it would be easy and comfortable for her to stay home and read a book or watch TV and pet her dogs.  Showing up to connect with new people and stay in touch with current connections is enriching and rewarding.  It's well worth the challenge. The next challenge is bringing more people together to widen the circle.

Julie's fun fact involves a nickname her brothers had for her.  With lots of pets as a child, and a knack for making rock biscuits, she was known around her house as "Elly May", after the Beverly Hillbillies character! What I remember of Elly May is her sweet, yet feisty nature.  Very fitting for this amazing woman who has taken on the role of our fearless PWN leader for 2016!

Do you have unfinished marketing projects either stuck in your laptop or in a towering pile on your desk? Do you dread the time it will take as you struggle to complete these projects that have been on your "to-do list" for far too long? Break the DIY cycle and turn those design projects over to Laurie Bend of pageonedesign. Laurie knows the busy lives of PWN members. Release the stress of never finishing that new logo or updated rack card by letting a professional handle the details. Laurie has been a PWN for over 12 years and a graphic designer for 25+ years, earning her B.S. in graphic design from SJSU. Her knowledge, creativity, expertise in design and printing can solve any marketing challenge you may have whether it be a printed brochure, new logo, website ad or business card layout. Visit her website for samples of her work: www.pageonedesign.biz

Here's what satisfied clients say about Laurie:

Laurie Bend of pageonedesign is a top-notch graphic designer.  Her ability to "think outside the box" means her clients receive contemporary, unique designs that convey both the quality and strength of their individual brands.  Laurie's ability to marry her graphic design skills with the development of smart, compelling copywriting insures that her clients get more than a just a graphic designer.  With pageonedesign, businesses get a marketing powerhouse!
From: Lori McDonnal, Community Programs Director - Special Kids Crusade

Laurie did an outstanding job designing and preparing the program for the Monterey County Business Council's 21st Anniversary Gala & Annual Economic Vitality Awards. She dealt with multiple award recipients providing multiple photos and biographical information and last minute changes up to the time of printing on the eve of the event with a calm and professional demeanor and delivered an excellent product. It's not often that we receive compliments on the layout and design of our event programs, but we received many at and after the Gala and we have continued to use the same for marketing purposes. We would not hesitate to recommend Laurie to others.
From: Brian Turlington, Executive Director - Monterey County Business Council (MCBC)

Presidents Message

Welcome current and new PWN members!

With our May Member Appreciation Mixer approaching, I want you to know that the Board and I are working to create value for our members.  Here are a few of the highlights to celebrate from the first four months of 2016:

We guaranteed a regular home for our PWN meetings the first Wednesday of every month by shifting venues to the Monterey Tides. (The Embassy Suites did not have our regular meeting dates available for 2016.)

We asked you to brainstorm ideas for enhancing the positive impact PWN has on you and your business and are implementing those as quickly as practical.

We are shoring up our infrastructure.  Mary Jeanne Vincent authored a conflict of interest agreement that ensures our bylaws reflect current best practices for non-profit organizations. Board members passed the new bylaw and agreed in writing to abide by those practices. She is also reviewing all of our bylaws to make sure they reflect current standards for non-profits.

Most recently, the Board made the decision to move our website to a member management system called Wild Apricot. Doing so enables the organization to save $168 every month ($2000 annually.) This is a major cost savings AND the result will be a fresher, easier to use website. It also incorporates the latest mobile responsiveness technology making it easier to navigate on phones, tablets and computers.

We are regularly attracting new professionals and business owners. Don't forget that you can still win a free one-year membership May 4th, if your guest joins before or during our Member Appreciation Mixer. Bring friends and buy your ticket now! Kudos to Myra Martinez for planning our exciting Hawaiian Luau.

One more exciting development: Jen Harty has been working with Michael Laroco on a very special fundraising event to be held in October. Details will be revealed at the Member Appreciation Mixer.

Please know that the 2016 Board is working on your behalf. We continue to Reach Out, Connect and Engage In PWN!

With much appreciation,

Julie Ahearn

We continue offering the opportunity for PWN members to be the hosts of our monthly "Coffee Talk." All you need to do is share an hour of your time as host, network and chat in a small, personal setting. It's fun!
