Upcoming
January Monthly Meeting
January 6th, 2016
5:30-7:30
Embassy Suites - Monterey Bay
1441 Canyon Del Rey
Seaside, CA
PWN Welcomes
Speaker:
Mary Duan
Editor-in-Chief,
Monterey County Weekly
Topic:
Leaning In:
Bringing Courage and Zen to Work
What does a seasoned and award-winning newspaper editor have to say about bringing courage and zen to work? That's the subject we'll be exploring as we kick off our first meeting in 2016. Monterey County Weekly's editor, Mary Duan, will be joining us to share her lessons-gleaned while surviving and thriving in the intense, crazy-manic world of journalism-and offering tips that can be applied in any professional field.
Come hear her thoughts about courage, or, as she puts it, "learning how to draw the line in the sand firmly and often." And her thoughts about bringing zen to work? Well, don't expect her to share tips about being relaxed and mellow-she assures us that's not going to happen. (She's described herself as the kind of person who can "make coffee nervous" when facing deadline pressure.) Rather, in Zen Buddhism, zen means bringing the full focus of our intuition and our true, unfettered nature to whatever we're doing.
Come enjoy time together where we'll learn from Mary-- and each other-- about how to bring more courage and zen to YOUR work in this interactive, thought-provoking, get-real evening.
A bit about Mary:
In the 5+ years that Mary Duan has been the editor-in-chief of the Monterey County Weekly, this independent newspaper has won numerous awards - including for General Excellence by the California Newspaper Publishers' Association in 2012, and most recently, the First Amendment Coalition of Free Speech and Open Government award which recognizes "actions [that] deserve public honor and emulation for the advancement of government transparency". In 2012 she was named the "Best Political Columnist" by the Association of Alternative Media, and won first place for environmental reporting from the California Newspaper Publishers' Association.
Receiving her Master's degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, Mary grew up in the South Side of Chicago. Prior to working at the Weekly, she reported on Silicon Valley, Salinas agriculture, LA race riots-among other adventures.
She and her husband have two sons and two dogs. And yes, her husband did win recently win the lottery.

THREE WAYS TO RELEASE YOUR INNER REBEL TO CREATE WORLD CHANGE
I've seen you arrive in your proper suit and professional smile. Just like everyone else in the room. But inside, is your inner rebel.
She is not like everyone else. She chaffs at the confines of conventionality. And she wants more. She wants extraordinary. She wants to step out of the shadows and share her divine purpose. She wants to do her part to change the world. To make the world kinder, more peaceful, filled with love and laughter. To heal the planet for our children and our grandchildren. To do this, you must be a different kind of entrepreneur. You can't just follow the time worn, safe path you've always followed. Releasing your inner rebel brings up a lot of fear.
BTW - it also creates massive success. Your voice of caution says, "People might not like me, they might say bad things about me, they might not want to hire me, they might even stone me!" Send love to that little voice, then do it anyway. Let your inner rebel soar in three steps! - First: Know what you stand for. What is your mission?
- Second: Study the how-tos of best marketing strategies, then tweak them for your unique business.
- Third: Find a mentor who will call you out and hold you to the highest version of yourself.
Release your Inner Rebel at the
Magical Biz Builders Playground, Feb. 19 - 21, to exponentially increase your income and impact.

Hello PWN Members,
I'm so excited for 2016 and all the great things that are afoot.
I've been a member of PWN since 2011 and each year watched and grown as a result of meeting and knowing so many strong, wise and helpful women. At the networking lunches and evening meetings, I find myself looking around the room and feeling a great sense of gratitude for having been able to work directly with so many of you.
My business and world has deepened and expanded as a result. PWN has been a terrific nucleus of activity and I want others to benefit from the connections that have blessed me.
In taking on the role of President, I thought about how we could make something good even better. The answer was plain.
- Go grass roots.
- Capitalize on what it means to be a networking organization.
- Focus on making every individual who arrives at our meetings feel included.
- Provide each individual with the opportunity to connect.
While there are many ways to build your business, face to face connecting is the most powerful. This is what PWN is all about.
With that in mind, look for some new experiences this year. We have a great slate of speakers, and each speaker will create a time during the meeting to have small group discussions.
Engage and connect with other attendees. We expect that you will leave PWN meetings with pertinent ideas and new connections.
Look for more mixers this year as well. Socialize with new and seasoned members in a more relaxed setting or at a featured host business. If you have wanted to host a mixer, here's your chance.
Don't forget. We still have the Power Networking Lunches and Coffee Talks to connect face to face.
Get ready to grow in 2016. It's going to be a great year of opportunities to participate, be included, and to connect!
