The Beautiful, Organized Desk
A desk often functions as the family work surface. Keeping it organized not only saves time and makes work more efficient, but the removal of clutter provides a more appealing home office environment.
Make a list of all supplies used for projects done at the desk. Group those items according to each task, and store them in desk drawers or portable organizers on the desktop surface. Keep the most frequently used items in the most easily accessible places, such as the top drawer. Reserve the desk top only for current projects.
Be sure to keep a pretty trash bin within close proximity of the desk for convenience.
If you are in the market for a new desk, look for practical features that will facilitate organization and provide maximum comfort. Drawers need to slide easily and be equipped with drawer stops. Matte surfaces are preferable over glossy tops for reduced glare. Be sure the opening under the desk is sufficient to accommodate a comfortable work chair.
L-shaped desks provide a more comprehensive workstation, allowing a greater volume of work to be accomplished at a single session. In addition to providing more storage space, the L-shaped surface is better designed for multi-tasking.
Sliding chairs are the most practical, providing greater mobility than stationary chairs. Be sure to use a heavy-duty plastic floor mat under the chair area if the floor is carpeted.
A desk area requires dedicated task lighting. Some desks are equipped with their own lighting units. A desktop lamp or ceiling lights also do the job. If you are using a lamp, be sure to position it to focus the light directly on the work area.
An organized desk is not only functional, but beautiful, as well.
