The Casual Trend
The last decade saw a big growth of the trend known as cocooning. Cocooning describes the tendency of people to retreat into their home and spend more time with family. This trend was recognized back in the 1990s, and it has been increasing ever since.
Cocooning has led to the current trend of casual decorating.
We are spending lots of time in our homes. We want to feel comfortable and cozy while we are by ourselves and when we entertain guests. We want homes that we can really live in.
So what does this cozy, casual, informal style look like?
Seating: Casual style calls for overstuffed sofas and chairs. They look casual, and they feel cozy and comfortable. The untailored look and feel of slipcovers will add to a casual mood.
Tables: Sturdy, indestructible tables are the way to go in a casual room.
Flooring: Casual also means easy-to-care-for. Choose tile or wood floors and low-maintenance carpeting.
Fabrics: Instead of stiff, formal fabrics, casual calls for fuss-free textiles - probably with texture. Choose fabrics and upholstery with movement and a laid back feel. Natural materials, like cotton-blends, are perfect.
Color: Any color goes with casual, but if you want a tranquil, relaxed mood, use neutrals as your background. You can always add colors to a neutral room.
Patterns: Casual patterns are simple and unfussy.
The warm, cozy, casual look is made for relaxing with family and friends. Put your feet up, and enjoy.
