Dorm Decorating

8 Fun Ideas for Your Son or Daughter's College Room

Decorating a college dorm room for your son or daughter can be a challenge. Their room at home will be spacious compared to the small dorm room - or even an apartment bedroom.   And the decorating needs may be temporary. Use these fun ideas to make the most of their personal space.

1.  Mirrors

Hang mirrors to add depth and dimension. Hanging several smaller mirrors in a group can add lots of visual interest, while using one large mirror will instantly create the illusion of more space.

2.  Under-bed storage under-bed storage

Take advantage of every inch of space. Beautiful baskets, plastic bins, and rolling drawers create easy-to-use extra storage that you can hide under your bed.

3.  Lamps

Don't simply rely on the overhead lighting that comes in your room. Add a few lamps. This not only creates interest and personality, but with light coming from several different directions, the room feels larger.

4.  Color

If you want your room to feel larger, stick to one color. Use similar hues on walls, bedding, and furniture. But it's not all about feeling larger. If you like color, go for it! Combining colors can add excitement and cheerfulness.

5.  Multi-purpose

To make the most of a small room, choose furniture that can be used for more than one purpose. A small table and chair placed next to the bed can be used as a nightstand, as well as a writing desk. A bench can act as storage and extra seating.

6.  Temporary wall coverings

Want to add bold color and pattern to your walls without angering the "landlord?" Try contact paper. You can create fun designs, and it peels off easily.

7.  Baskets, baskets, baskets

Baskets add tons of much-needed storage space. They complement almost any style, so they can be left out as beautiful, functional accessories. Have fun choosing designs that you love. You can store schoolbooks, toiletries, shoes... anything!

8.  Expand the closet

Clear storage boxes, covered bins, and stacking containers make a closet seem double the size and hold twice as much. Plus they make it easy to pack up when it's time to move out. Just grab your containers and go.

Frequently Asked Questions

* How should I make curtains for my daughter's dorm room?

  • Since students tend to change rooms yearly, I would suggest making a curtain with a rod pocket that is gathered on a simple rod. That way the width can be adjustable depending upon the size of the window she might have. Certainly a fabric treatment will seem cozy and more like home for your daughter or son. Check out our remnants. We might have just the right fabric.   Mention this article and I will give you 50% off the remnant price!
  • We can also order you a tension rod so you don't have to put any holes in the wall.

Monthly Tips

Now that your child is off to college, use some of the tips she is using.

  • Use clear storage containers to organize what was left by your child. Sweaters in one, shoes in another, you get the picture. You will enjoy the clean, organized room and when the first frost hits and she comes home looking for sweaters, she will know just where they are.
  • These can stored in the closet, under the bed, or neatly in a corner.
  • Add baskets to her home desk and dresser so that the miscellaneous she leaves behind can be organized by category. This will help you feel more organized about the room she barely uses without making her feel you have kicked her out.
