Bookcases are perfect for housing commonly used books and providing a visible place to display photographs, knickknacks, and mementos. As with many pieces of stand-alone furniture in the home, bookcases are safer when positioned properly and mounted to a wall. Because heavy books and other objects are often placed on bookcases, do not take a chance by leaving it unsecured, especially if you have children or pets in the home.
The books and materials that are used most often in the home should be placed on a middle shelf so they are most accessible. Avoid placing heavy books on high or low shelves. Reaching or bending to lift bulky objects can cause discomfort or injury, so keep them no more than arm's length away.
Avoid cramming too many books on a single shelf. If books and other materials are too crowded, it looks cluttered and messy. It also becomes difficult to pull an item from its place. Leave a little breathing space on each shelf for good aesthetics. This also makes unnecessary to struggle when removing or replacing a book. Your guests may want to peruse your books so they need to be able to pull them in and out easily.

Bookshelves can also be used for decorative items. Design interest can be added by placing books on half of the bookshelf and placing a ceramic bowl or framed photographs on the other side. This can be a good place for mementos from trips your family has taken. Books can be arranged in the usual upright position but they can also be placed with the back cover down, stacking several books high. Alternate books and decorative accessories to create a pleasing look. And this can certainly be a great place for books with colorful jackets. Unusual book ends can be an accent too.
Group similar books together. Create categories to avoid searching each and every title for one particular book. A logical, organized system saves time and avoids frustration. Review and prioritize the items on bookcases to determine whether they should be kept on display or moved to a less accessible storage area.
If a bookcase has cabinets, be sure the doors have beautiful handles. Hardware is available in many finishes and colors so the handles can harmonize beautifully with the room style.
Select bookcases that complement the décor of the room, but make sure they are safe and functional as well. Books and mementos can always be a great conversation starter.
