The Crypto Locker virus is considered to be a historically devastating virus because it holds your computer hostage until you pay a ransom by encrypting all docs pics and other data files. The Crypto Locker virus is easy to get and almost impossible to get rid of, unless you pay a ransom of up to $700.

More specifically, the Crypto Locker virus is typically spread through emails that pretend to be customer support related issues from Fedex, UPS, DHS, etc. These emails contain a zip attachment that when opened will infect the computer. These zip files contain executables that are disguised as PDF files as they have a PDF icon and are typically named something like FORM_101513.EXE or Form.ZIP. Since Microsoft does not show extensions by default, they look like normal PDF files and people open them.  My Tech Guys has even had this infect their computers when an attachment came in and one of our staff thought it was a legitimate email.

Once you send the payment and it is verified, the program promises that it will decrypt the files that it encrypted, at least that is what the Crypto Locker virus screen promises. However, even when paying the ransom demanded by the Crypto Locker virus screen, one might not get all of the encrypted files back.

Remember to run backup software to protect your files in case you get infected.  If you get infected with any virus please contact My Tech Guys as soon as possible to get it removed at 250-890-1065.

Most of us are familiar with the little pop-ups we get asking us to install updates.  While they only take a few minutes to complete, many of us are guilty of postponing them or just ignoring them completely. But keeping up with these computer updates is actually very important when it comes to having a healthy and secure computer. These updates are just as important as having an anti-virus program. Sometimes the automagic updates can fail so we suggest checking to make sure you have the latest versions of the following once a month.
