Newest JAVA Update Kills Online Games and other things
Although we always say update JAVA, Flash, Acrobat, Windows and Anti-virus programs, occasionally it can have unintended consequences.  The latest JAVA update from JAVA (7.51) has had the unfortunate side affect that some online games like Yahoo Games and Pogo can stop working.  Luckily there is a fix but Yahoo has said it does not support the latest version of JAVA for every games as it would require them to recode all the games to comply with JAVA's new security.  You can read the entire story here.

Applications where this issue may be seen include:
Yaho
o Games
Ebay and Paypal Shipping Label
USAA
Etrade Marketcaster

For the fix you can head over to JAVAs help pages here to see how to change the settings in JAVA to make you stuff work.

Still having issues, give us a call at 250-338-4411 and we can fix it remotely or have one of our friendly techs come out and get your stuff in order.

MTG Donates Computers to Doug Thomson

Since My Tech Guys started back in 2006 we have always tried to keep computers out of the landfill and running for as long as possible. If someone donates a computer that still has some life left in it, we wipe the hard drive and clean up the computer for a new home.

Long time customer Doug was stoked to get his new-to-him gently used computer to replace his 10 year old system.  Doug came to us to looking for an inexpensive used computer but alas we do not sell many used systems, but we did have a donated system from one of our great customers that fit the bill perfectly.  "This is AWESOME!!!  Thanks so much.  You guys are great!!!" said Doug Thompson.

Have a computer, tablet or smart phone with some life left in it?  Want to give it to a new home?  Drop it off at our Courtenay store and our geeks will assess how much life it has and if it can be useful we will wipe your data and clean it up so it can have a new life and provide value to those in need.

Updates, Don't Forget - and Do Your Backups!!!

Windows 8 Service Pack 1 is now out, that is the biggest update to Windows 8 since its release a year ago.  We'll have more on this next month but you can read up on it here

Most of us are familiar with the little pop-ups we get asking us to install updates.  While they only take a few minutes to complete, many of us are guilty of postponing them or just ignoring them completely. But keeping up with these computer updates is actually very important when it comes to having a healthy and secure computer. These updates are just as important as having an anti-virus program. Sometimes the auto-magic updates can fail so we suggest checking to make sure you have the latest versions of the following once a month.

Some of the most common updates are:

With the New Year its time to make sure your backups are running smoothly and backing up your critical data.  Whether it's family pics or financial records we can help make sure your stuff is protected.  Call us about our cloud and local backup solutions.

Have a Smart Phone or Tablet?  Don't forget to update your iOS or Android (and Apps) software to keep up with security updates and new features.

If you have any questions or feel its been awhile since you've done any updates, call us and book a in-home service call or remote service call 250-890-1065
