App of the Month

  Magic Jack

Many of us own a smartphone or a tablet device which always us to explore hundreds of thousands of Apps that you can find in the App Store or Google Play...

As someone that enjoys to travel for both work and pleasure, one of the issues is being able to keep in contact with my staff and family. Using a cell phone while traveling can rack up huge roaming charges which can be a nasty surprise when you get home.  That is where the Magic Jack App comes in.  If all you have is a WiFi connection you can make calls to anywhere in Canada and the US for free.  And you can even get your own number so people can call you.

MTG Donates Computers to CYMC

Since My Tech Guys started back in 2006 we have always tried to keep computers running for as long as possible, and if someone donates a computer that still has some life left in it, we wipe the hard drive and clean up the computer for a new home.

As a long time supporter of CYMC (Bob Wells was Treasurer and President of CYMC before starting My Tech Guys) we have done as much as we can for CYMC over the years.  From domain registration to website design / hosting to providing computers and printers for the summer camp we always feel good after taking care of their tech needs.  Recently Joel (our Green Geek) replaced their office computer we had donated to them several years ago.  Kate Green  was very happy stating "as a non-profit it has been great to have the guys at My Tech Guys give so generously.  Joel has helped us out of our Tech Jams".

Have a computer with some life left in it?  Want to give it to a new home?  Drop it off at our Courtenay store and our geeks will asses how much life it has and if it can be useful we will wipe your data and clean it up so it can have a new life and provide vaule to those in need.

Updates, Don't Forget - and Do Your Backups!!!

Windows 8 Service Pack 1 is now out, that is the biggest update to Windows 8 since its release a year ago.  We'll have more on this next month but you can read up on it here

Most of us are familiar with the little pop-ups we get asking us to install updates.  While they only take a few minutes to complete, many of us are guilty of postponing them or just ignoring them completely. But keeping up with these computer updates is actually very important when it comes to having a healthy and secure computer. These updates are just as important as having an anti-virus program. Sometimes the auto-magic updates can fail so we suggest checking to make sure you have the latest versions of the following once a month.

Some of the most common updates are:

With the New Year its time to make sure your backups are running smoothly and backing up your critical data.  Whether it's family pics or financial records we can help make sure your stuff is protected.  Call us about our cloud and local backup solutions.

Have a Smart Phone or Tablet?  Don't forget to update your iOS or Android (and Apps) software to keep up with security updates and new features.

If you have any questions or feel its been awhile since you've done any updates, call us and book a in-home service call or remote service call 250-890-1065
