   Meet Palo Alto College's
  Former Outstanding Student for 2013
Patricia Ann Galan-Cisneros
 former outstanding student 2013

Patricia Ann Galan-Cisneros, Community Liaison for VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, completed an Associate's of Arts degree at Palo Alto College in 1995. Upon completing her Associate degree, she transferred to Texas State University in San Marcos where she obtained her Bachelor in Social Work in 1997.

Since 1997, her career has been filled with many different roles and positions within the community. Ms. Galan-Cisneros continues to provide social work service because of her past work experience as a Case Worker with Parent Child Incorporated, an Activity Coordinator at Villa Guadalupe in Chicago, Illinois, a Case Manager for JOVEN, and a Case Manager at SAMMinistries which has helped her to better serve her clients. Ms. Galan-Cisneros loves her profession and has enjoyed working with all her clients.

Ms. Galan-Cisneros is a member of the Practicum Advisory Council for both School of Social Work at Our Lady of the Lake University and UT-San Antonio. She serves as Adjunct Faculty for the School of Social Work at Our Lady of the Lake University and has mentored numerous social work interns and theological studies seminarians. Patricia has implemented several projects relevant to servicing and educating the Hispanic community, with the emphasis of improving end-of-life care and bringing awareness and support to the families. In 2010, she was awarded the VITAS Leadership Council Award for Community Service - an award for employees that demonstrate dedication to the community while representing the company's core values.

Recently, Patricia was awarded the 2012 Las Estrellas de Tejas Award from the San Antonio Chapter of Hispanic Women's Network of Texas. She received the award for her leadership qualities, impact on the community and being a role model for other women.

Patricia Ann Galan-Cisneros is blessed with a beautiful 3-year old son named Patrick and her husband James Paul Cisneros of nine years. Patricia's career and family have been enriched by two main influences/mentors, Sister Carmen and Julie Kern. Sister Carmen was the Director for Catholic Campus Ministry at Palo Alto College  while Patricia attended school at Palo Alto. Sister Carmen's kind heart and compassion served as a positive force to Patricia and fostered the confidence and strength that Patricia has today. Julie Kern was a mathematics professor at Palto Alto College who not only improved Patricia's math skills, but encouraged Patricia to go beyond ... to be confident and do things that were out of her comfort zone.

Patricia's success and achievements have roots not only from her parents, but also from the friends she acquired throughout her years at Palo Alto College. The friends that Patricia has in her life today like Sister Carmen and Julie Kern still influence her today and remain a big part of her life and how she provides services to her clients today.

NASA Great Moonbuggy Race

The 20th Annual Great Moonbuggy Race ® was held April 25 - 27, 2013 in Huntsville, Alabama, at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Entry applicants (students) were required to design a vehicle that addressed a series of engineering problems that are similar to problems faced by the original Moonbuggy team. Moonbuggy entries were expected to be of "proof-of-concept" and engineering test model nature, rather than final production models. Each student team of six members was responsible for building their own buggy. The top three winning teams in each division (one high school division and one college division) were the teams with the shortest total times in assembling their moonbuggies and traversing the terrain course. Importantly, Anthony David "Cowboy" Alvarado Sr. and Jose Villarreal Garcia - alumni from Palo Alto  College - were members of a group of students from TAMUK that competed in the Great Moonbuggy Race and enjoyed the experience. The winning teams outraced more than 89 teams from 23 states. Press releases and photos available at http://moonbuggy.msfc.nasa.gov/press.html

Special Congratulations:

A special congratulations goes out to nine former Palo Alto College engineering students who received their bachelor degrees from Texas A&M University - Kingsville in May 2013. Anthony David "Cowboy" Alvarado Sr., Jose Villarreal Garcia, Fermin Medina, Marisa Guzman, Anna Leija, Norma Pena, Nicholas Haliscak, Matt Burke, and Pat Horner (Fall 2012) all successfully transferred to the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering at TAMUK upon their completion at Palo Alto College. These former students collectively studied in multiple fields such as Mechanical, Architectural, Civil, and Electrical Engineering. These students were among the "Who's Who of U.S. University Students of 2012" and were members of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society at TAMUK. In addition, these students  received Graduation Honors from their respective fields of study which was a great accomplishment.

Congratulations to our alumni!

14 Fatal Resume Mistakes

Avoid these Resume Blunders at All Costs

By Dawn Dugan, Salary.com contributing writer.

The adage "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" is never truer than when you submit your resume. Because this is likely the first glimpse of you that employers will get, make it an impressive one. A great resume can open a door, but an inferior one can just as quickly close one. This article explores 14 resume mistakes to avoid at all costs.

MISTAKE # 1: Yes, you need a cover letter even when you are emailing your resume, posting it to a job board, or sending it electronically. A cover letter is the best place to introduce yourself, identify your goals, and briefly describe why you are a good fit for the position. A well-written cover letter is a sales tool that will ensure your resume will be read.

MISTAKE # 2: Avoid using cookie-cutter resume templates, such as those from Microsoft or other resume-generating programs. Hiring managers will spot them in an instant, and will assume you either lack creativity or don't care enough about the position you are applying for to go the extra mile.

MISTAKE # 3: Resumes that arrive unconventionally, are on colored or perfumed paper, or have many different fonts in an effort to make them stick out in the crowd will likely go unread. Employers will assume that if you need to resort to these tactics, you probably don't have the qualifications for the job.

MISTAKE # 4: This is the best way to paint yourself into a corner, and is not a good way to go if you want the employer to keep you in mind for other positions that you may also be qualified for. Lose the objective statement.

MISTAKE #5: Your resume must be grammatically perfect. Most positions today require good communication and writing skills, and if your resume is riddled with errors, you'll be immediately judged as someone who doesn't possess these basic skills. It stands to reason that if you can't spell "financial analyst" correctly, you have no business being one.

MISTAKE #6: Your resume should clearly state what you do, what you are good at, and what you have accomplished. If you are applying for a sales position focus on your numbers and statistics, and give your two years as a veterinary technician a backseat, if any ink at all. If you have a long work history with valuable experience in more than one area, for example, sales and marketing -- it may make sense to craft two resumes: one that focuses on sales, and another that focuses on marketing.

MISTAKE # 7: Statistics show that hiring managers spend just a couple of seconds looking at a resume before deciding whether it warrants a full read, so be sure to show them what they want to see first. When listing past employment, instead of listing dates first list them last. A good order is: title/position, name of employer, city/state of employer, and then dates.

MISTAKE # 8: Contrary to popular opinion you don't need to keep your resume down to one page, especially if you've accrued some work experience. The goal should be to document everything you've done, without being verbose. One page should suffice for entry-level workers and those with a few years of work experience. If you have more than six or seven years of experience, two pages is appropriate.

MISTAKE #9: Hiring managers have piles of resumes to get through, and most of them are unwilling to struggle through a tough read no matter how qualified the candidate. Avoid turnoffs like dense type and paragraphs, and use bullets instead. Think easily digestible nuggets, rather than lengthy sentences.

MISTAKE # 10: Employers don't care what duties were assigned to you in your past jobs. All they are really concerned about is what you have done, and what you can do for them. Focus on your accomplishments, rather than your duties. Use statistics and numbers. Show how you solved problems. Avoid phrases like "duties included" or "responsibilities included."

MISTAKE # 11: If you choose to put hobbies and interests on your resume, use them sparingly and choose them carefully to ensure they are not potentially controversial or offensive, or worthy of chuckles or eye rolling. Including that you enjoy tennis, reading, and rock climbing is fine.

MISTAKE #12: Some people do this believing that it's a way to get their foot into the door of a company they would really like to work for. But employers find this a waste of their time, and are annoyed by this practice. If the employer remembers you later when you apply for a job you are actually qualified for, it won't be fondly.

MISTAKE #13: If you are submitting online, be aware that hiring managers will do a quick search of keywords and keyword phrases to find appropriate resumes. If you apply for a job where the company uses technology to search for keywords, and you don't have those keywords in your resume, your resume will go unnoticed.

MISTAKE # 14: This is often used as a way to end a resume, but it's completely unnecessary.
