Alumni Spotlight...Dr. Amie De Leon
Title: Associate Professor of Teacher Education at Palo Alto College
Year attended: 1992
Degree/s Completed:
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology - University of Incarnate Word
Master of Science in Counseling and Guidance - TAMU Kingsville
Doctor of Educational Leadership - TAMU Kingsville

Tell us about your family and upbringing.
I am a first generation college student who grew up in a rural area. I felt that going to college would be my way out of my small town and a way to better myself.
How did this impact your decision to pursue a career in education?
I really fell into education and teaching. After completing my B.A. in Psychology, I was not able to attend graduate school and began substitute teaching. I fell in love with it. I went back to school and obtained my Texas Teacher Certification.
What made you choose PAC to start your undergraduate studies?
PAC was a small, close and cost efficient college to begin my education. I was intimidated by the thought of going to college and PAC was welcoming.
What challenges did you encounter in your college career?
Since I was a first generation college student I was unprepared as to how the college world worked. The lack of money was a challenge for me to overcome. I also did not own a car so I had to borrow rides to school.
What memory stands out the most from your experience at PAC?
Friends and the down time in the Student Center.
What university did you transfer to and why?
I transferred to UIW to pursue a nursing degree. However after transferring I changed my major. Every summer I would return to PAC to take classes since the cost was so much more reasonable.
What are you most proud of since graduating from PAC?
I am most proud of the person I have become. I am a College Professor who now can make an impact on my students' lives and future. Returning to PAC where it all began is a wonderful honor. During the SACS Reaccreditation of PAC I was asked to co-chair the compliance committee. This was a huge task but the College was successful in the reaccreditation process and I was proud to be a part of that history of the College.
What are your career goals?
I want to continue teaching but I would also like to become Chair of my department.
Are there any words of advice you share with your students, that you wish someone would have told you when you were in college?
I wish I had been told that I should have made a better connection with my professors. I now know that my professors were not to be feared but rather they were there to help. |
