ROBERT HADDOW
  1921 - 2016

Our longtime parishioner Robert Haddow, 94, of Greenwich, CT died on February 17, 2016.  Born in New Castle, PA in 1921, raised in California, he proudly attained the rank of Eagle Scout as shown in the photo above. Robert graduated from the California Maritime Academy in 1942 and went to sea with Moore-McCormack Lines, serving as chief engineer during World War II. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1947 with a degree in ocean transportation, then
held administrative positions with Tidewater Oil Company until 1964.

Robert and his wife, Ginger, met in their California days, on a ski trip in Reno. They were married, and then moved to
New York, where Robert joined Standard Oil Co. of Indiana (Amoco), rising to the position of president of Amoco Shipping Company. In 1975, he was appointed shipping advisor to The Burmah Oil Company Ltd. to help resolve the company's tanker crisis. He later served as chief executive of Burmah Oil Tankers and president of Burmah Oil Shipping. He joined Ultramar in 1980 as senior vice president. Before retiring he held the position of president of American Maritime Transport.

Robert had a great love of dogs, particularly Labrador Retrievers, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens, and one Wire-Hair Fox Terrier. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Scotland where his parents came from. His hobbies included salmon fishing, grouse shooting, and golfing. Known as "Grumpy" to his grandchildren, he was funny, wise, and generous. In addition to his wife of 65 years, Ginger, Robert is survived by his daughter Susan Haddow, daughter-in-law Amy Haddow and four grandsons: Tyler, Peter, Matthew, and Michael. A son, Robert Haddow, predeceased him. Memorial contributions may be made to The Boy Scouts.
