January 2014     Volume 5     No. 1
Super Sleuth

Congratulations to our Super Sleuths for December: Priscilla White, Johnson County; Susanne Reiter, Delaware County; Mary Hawley, Wright County; Alyce Dolphin, Dubuque County; Marlys Anderson, Marion County; and Doug McMullin, Wapello County. This sextet responded to the newsletter within a few hours of each other, so all deserve recognition. They recognized the mystery plant as Bletilla striata, which is commonly called Chinese ground orchid. Its purple blooms are produced in late spring to early summer when given conditions it prefers--part shade and moist, well-drained soil. Although it is listed as hardy in Zones 5-9, here in Iowa it's best to provide protective mulch over winter.

Denny Schrock, State Master Gardener Coordinator

January Mystery Plant
What am I?

The January Mystery Plant is a tender vine adaptable to indoor culture. Its elongated heart-shape leaves are splashed with silver and backed in burgundy. It can be grown either in a hanging basket or climbing a support pole as shown in this picture.

Send your response including both its common and botanical names in your reply to Denny.
Winter 2014 Class on Campus

The winter 2014 Master Gardener classes have started, and the Saturday class on campus is scheduled for February 22. If you need to make up the class-on-campus session, check with your local coordinator about getting signed up for that session. Also, if you've already gone through the class-on-campus experience, but would like a refresher, we're still looking for a few group leaders. Please let Denny know if you'd like to help out that day.

Search for Excellence Awards 2014

The application forms for the 2014 Iowa Master Gardener Search for Excellence Awards are now available online through the Search for Excellence link on the Master Gardener website.

Does your Master Gardener group have an outstanding project or two in one or more of the Search for Excellence categories: Youth Programs, Demonstration Gardens, Workshop or Presentation, Community Service, Innovative Project, Special Needs Audience (Senior, Disabled or Horticultural Therapy) or Research (applied scientific methodology)? If so, we'd like to hear about it, and you may get some well-deserved recognition for the project. Application deadline is March 15, 2014. Download the application form and guidelines from the website. Submit completed forms along with a confirmation letter from your local coordinator to Denny Schrock at the state Master Gardener office.

2013 Hours Reporting Wrap Up

Have you reported all your hours for 2013? Remember that as of 2013, the MG Volunteer Hours requirement is 12 hours of volunteer service. The MG Educational Hours requirement remains at 6 hours.

Let's make sure that ALL your hours for 2013 get reported! Many Master Gardeners have told me that they don't report all of their hours. It is important that we capture the full picture of Master Gardener service to the state of Iowa. At the state level, we are required to report Master Gardener contacts and hours of service to Extension administrators who in turn report the numbers to USDA, ISU administration, and the legislature. Providing less than a complete picture shortchanges the impact that you as Master Gardeners have in the state of Iowa. You may not think that under-reporting by 10 or 20 hours is a big deal, but if all 2,500 Iowa Master Gardeners do so, that amounts to 25,000 to 50,000 hours, and a value of half a million to a million dollars!

As of late January slightly more than 86,000 volunteer service hours and more than 18,500 continuing education hours have been reported, and your educational efforts reached more than 600,000 Iowans. Those are great numbers, but we're still short of last year's totals, and there are some obvious gaps in the hours recorded. Let's see if we can exceed the 100,000 hours reported for 2012!

2015 Garden Whimsy Calendar Submissions

Are you a photography buff? Each year the Iowa State University Extension & Outreach Calendar is based on a theme. For 2015 the theme will be garden whimsy. Think about seasonal decorations in the garden as well as garden art with a whimsical touch. The marching band pictured above is at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Museum in Grand Rapids, MI. Minimum quality standards for the photos are 300 dpi at 8 x 11 inches in landscape orientation. Images may be jpg or tiff format. Deadline for submission of images is March 1, 2014. That gives you plenty of time to find your fabulously fun garden art and decorative photos.

Please email your entries to either Denny or Cindy or mail a DVD or jump drive containing the high-res images to us at 106 Horticulture Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011.  Photographers will be credited in the calendar, but there is no monetary compensation for selected images.
