 McKMS Blue Ribbon

In September, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School for the second time as an educational site to be awarded National Blue Ribbon status. In all, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) has nine Blue Ribbon Schools but 11 Blue Ribbon Awards (Baton Rouge Magnet High School also has received the award twice).

McKinley Middle School was one of only five schools in the state to receive the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award and the only school in this area of the state to be recognized for this national distinction.

Principal Sherry Brock (in photo, center wearing gray pantsuit with Embassy officials and winning school principals from across the nation) and Magnet lead teacher Clare Peterson attended a special ceremony at the Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C., September 9 to accept a very special award on behalf of their school. Westdale Middle School and its Foreign Language Immersion Program earned the top national honor of the Award for Academic Excellence in Spanish: School of the Year 2011.
