SUSANNAH
Berks Opera Workshop and the Fall Festival of the Arts collaborate again, with a production of Carlisle Floyd's masterpiece, one of the most important and beautiful modern operas, laced with Appalachian folk songs, hymns and full-blooded operatic melodies.
Written in the depths of the McCarthy era but inspired by the biblical Apocrypha, Susannah's story is eternal: an innocent young person is targeted by closed-minded hypocrites and preyed upon by a corrupt leader. With Tamara Black, soprano, Metropolitan Opera tenor and bass Charles Reid and Jeremy Galyon, and BOW young artists. BOW artistic director Francine Black conducts and Joel Gori directs.
Free multimedia introduction by BOW President David Richie 45 minutes before curtain.
Tickets only available through Miller Center for the Arts box office at 610-607-6270 or online at www.racc.edu/millercenter , and at the door. $40 priority seating; $25 general admission; $13 students.
Funded in part by grants to the Berks Opera Workshop from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Reading Musical Foundation and the Puffin Foundation.

PENN STREET POSSE
to beautify center-city median strips
For immediate release - The Penn Street Posse, a group of volunteers working with the Downtown Improvement District and the City of Reading, will be beautifying the median strips with flowering plants and decorative grasses in the 400 and 500 blocks of Penn Street.
The planting of knock-out roses and liriope will occur the morning of Saturday, Aug. 4, beginning at 8 a.m. The posse, working with volunteers from the Berks County Master Gardeners, the City of Reading codes department, Entrepreneurs Connection, and others, will plant nearly 50 rose bushes (in pinks and reds) and the bluish-hued liriopethat morning.
Diane Salks, owner of Riverview Tree and Landscape, Alsace Township, has been a leader of this effort, donating much in the way of materials and manpower. Members of Salks' crew have completed preparatory work for the plantings, including the removal of stumps and dead shrubs in the medians as well as weed-removal treatment.
The original intent of the Penn Street Posse was to hold a landscapers' competition for the design and plantings of the medians. However, the recruitment of landscapers did not occur as hoped. The Plan B effort, spearheaded by Salks and Lori Kaplan, a posse member, insures that the median strips will become colorful and welcoming to residents, workers, and visitors to the downtown.
The cost of the plants and related materials for the effort is approximately $2,200. Members of the posse, who are donating funds themselves, and Charles Broad, executive director of DID, are reaching out to downtown businesses and organizations for contributions. Donations can be made payable to DID which will administrate the funds from a special account.
In addition, Riverview Landscaping, former Mayor Tom McMahon and GoggleWorks artist Jesse Gomez, are designing a special piece of public art which will be located at the western tip of the median in the 500 block of Penn Street. The debut of that art is expected to coincide with a special early September event at the Pagoda.
The work party kicks off Aug. 4. Mayor Vaughn Spencer and members of City Council are invited to participate and lend their support to the gardeners.
The Penn Street Posse previously successfully spearheaded a campaign to plant and place the flowering hanging planters along Penn Street. The donations for that effort exceeded goal, insuring there will be funds for a seasonal replenishment of the planters in time for the annual holiday parade in November.
