Earn an Apprenticeship While Doing Your Job in the Navy, Marines or US Coast Guard
Enlisted service members in the Navy, Marines and US Coast Guard may be able to apply their everyday work towards a civilian-recognized apprenticeship.
The United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP) began in the 1970's as a way to get military members civilian-recognized skills with higher starting salaries. Many navy ratings correspond to civilian jobs where apprenticeships can be advantageous.
Nearly every rank has a corresponding apprenticeship that sailors can apply to complete through their regular working hours. When the requirements of the apprenticeship are met, sailors will receive a certificate from the US Department of Labor that can qualify them to enter the civilian workforce as a journeyman in their trade.
TO APPLY: 1. Go to the USMAPS website for a list of available programs and their requirements and online application.
2. Once the application is submitted, the USMAPS office reviews it and verifies that the sailor has the required training and duties needed to complete the program. This may require the office to reach out to the sailor's command. They will also verify that the sailor has already been trained through the required "A" or "C" school and are working in the Navy job that corresponds to the desired apprenticeship.
3. Once you're approved, it's just a matter of filling out paperwork. Sailors must document their work hours by skill area, daily (a document is provided to do this). These time logs must be signed off on weekly by sailors' supervisors as well as at the end of the month. Every six months it must be signed off on by the command leadership.
4. Once the required hours have been met, the US Department of Labor will send the certificate.
