Professional Development

New on the Horizon - Instructional Design (ID)

What is Instructional Design?
In short, instructional design is the systematic process by which instructional materials are designed, developed, and delivered. The terms instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology, curriculum design, and instructional systems design (ISD), are often used interchangeably (Instructional Design CENTRAL, 2014).

The program's pilot focus and marketing target demographic will be military personnel in an instructor/trainer role, who may need instructional support and education due to the downsizing of commands and Navy-wide initiatives for "reducing administrative distractions" (RAD) and the streamlining of "command-delivered training".

The CMVE/Military Contract Programs will help support commands through RAD by offering training for those in instructional/training roles, which would help the Navy stay focused on mission readiness. Upon the completion of a successful proof of concept with a military-focused demographic, the program will be expanded to include other demographics and/or markets (i.e. TCC faculty and administrators, education community, etc.).

The program is anticipated to start early September, 2014, which will consist of 6 courses, 4 - 8 weeks in length.

Program Courses:

  1. Introduction to Instructional Design
  2. Analysis and Course Design
  3. Developing Measurable Learning Objectives and Assessments
  4. Instructional Strategies
  5. Instructional Materials
  6. ID Capstone

Upon successful completion of the ID Program, participants will receive a badge to utilize in their email signature and syllabi or syllabuses and a certificate of completion.

Military News

Sailors with Higher Education Advance Faster

Get a degree - or risk falling behind those who do.

According to an article in Navy Times, "Sailors with degrees are making rank faster than their peers each and every cycle, outpacing them because of extra advancement points from their degrees plus the benefits of more education, like better study habits."

The article goes on to note that particularly in ratings where advancement opportunities are slim, the points awarded for having higher education, or even studying and working towards a degree, can be the difference that propels you ahead of the hundreds of other candidates.

But benefits of an education go beyond rank or having a diploma to hang on the wall. Ernie D'Antonio, director of voluntary education programs for the Navy's Center for Personal and Professional Development says "These benefits are as tangible as they are intangible in that a sailor develops critical thinking skills, they develop the ability to analyze. They develop the ability to communicate by enhancing their communication skills."

Want to advance in your rank, jump start your career or reach a personal goal? Contact a CMVE Advisor today to get started!

TCC Makes the News with its Textbook Free Z-Degree
The cost of textbooks can make college prohibitive for many students, but TCC's Pilot Z-Degree program is changing that.
Last fall, TCC piloted a program with Lumen Learning which allows students to pursue an Associate of Science in Business Administration without buying a single text book by using Open Source text materials which are embedded within the courses. The program recently made news in The Hechinger Report . Read the article to find out more about this popular program which offers a lot of savings for future students.
