Math Pre-Placement Program

CMVE Math Pre-Placement Prep Pilot Program Still Enrolling Students!

math-teacher-chalkboard.jpg

The CMVE recently began a Math Pre-Placement Prep pilot program for military-related students, and participants are already showing significant success!

Students participating in the program have access to an online math program that covers material from all the developmental MTE courses.  The program includes diagnostic testing, individualized learning plans, self-paced learning, tutor access, and post-assessment.

And, good news!  The pilot program is STILL ACCEPTING interested students who meet the following criteria:

  • Students must NOT have taken any MTE courses.
  • Students must NOT have taken the Virginia Math Placement Test more than once.
  • Students must be willing to work diligently to achieve success.

Interested students should contact:

Student Success Story

La-Toya Mack started her career at TCC in 2009 as a work study student. Now she manages the office she used to work for.

La-Toya Mack,
VA Office Manager

La-Toya Mack started her career at TCC in 2009 as a work-study student at the Virginia Beach Veterans Affairs office while earning her Associates Degree in Social Science.

After completing her A.S. in 2010, she moved on to Virginia Wesleyan College to complete her B.S. in Social Sciences with a concentration in Psychology, but she continued to work at TCC, helping veterans and other military-related students get information they needed and connecting them to resources.

After completing her B.S. she was hired as an academic advisor at the newly founded Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE), which she did full-time while completing her Masters of Science in Vocational Rehabilitation through Virginia Commonwealth University. She finished her degree this past May and is now the Office Manager for the Veterans Affairs office at TCC's Norfolk Campus.

Prior to her college career, La-Toya was a gas turbine systems mechanic in the Navy for six years. When she got out of the Navy, she used the Vocational Rehabilitation program to get started on her education and career. Her positive experience with this program is what pushed her to get her Masters in Voc Rehab. She says this degree is extremely useful in working with military-related and veteran students. "The biggest issue our veteran students have is transition. They're used to being told what to do all day, every day, and then they get to college and they can feel lost, overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next, and I can help them through this because I've been there." La-Toya says.

In addition to helping students find their way through the college maze, La-Toya says she also loves that her jobs allows her to be a military student advocate. "In my job, I get to get out to other offices and departments and help them get a better idea of how they can help veteran students, and I work closely with faculty and deans to make sure they are giving military-related students the best advice and access to all the resources they have available."

La-Toya is proof that from TCC, you really can go anywhere - even if it's a career right back where you began.
