Important Announcements

Take a Survey to let the Student Veterans of America know about your educational experiences.

A new survey has been developed with support from a Google Global Impact Award, the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) and in collaboration with Student Veterans of America (SVA).

The survey is to understand Servicemembers' service and post-service experiences, challenges, and recommendations as they relate to education and successful transition.

All military Servicemembers (active duty, reserves, guard), Veterans and their families are eligible to participate.
  • The survey should take approximately 20 minutes, depending on your answers.
  • Your responses will remain entirely confidential.
All survey findings and accompanying research reports will be made publicly available online by IVMF in the coming months: www.vets.syr.edu.

This event is tailored for veterans interested in working in marketing and technology roles with the sports entertainment industry.

Hirepurpose has teamed with the Sports and Entertainment Alliance in Technology conference in Miami this summer to educate veterans and transitioning service members about sports marketing and technology careers.

Selected veterans will be invited to attend a two-day conference in Miami Beach from July 20-22 with more than 700 executives from professional and college sports teams and venues.

The highlights of the event include a tour of the Marlins' and Dolphins' stadiums and a panel on transitioning from a military career to a career in sports and entertainment, moderated by Hirepurpose's founder and CEO, Zach Iscol.

Also slated to appear on the panel are Brandon McNulty, a Navy veteran and the Chief Technology Officer of the International Speedway Corporation; Chip Suttles, a Navy veteran and the Vice President of Technology for the Seattle Seahawks. John Avenson, a Marine veteran and the Vice President of Technology for the Minnesota Twins; Denise Taylor, who as Chief Information Officer for AEG Worldwide employs several Veterans in her organization; and Jack Sumner, a Navy veteran and the Chief Information Officer for the Ladies Professional Golf Association.

TCC Honors Military Students at Graduation
Congratulations to this year's 2014 Military graduates!

For the first time in history, Tidewater Community College has elected to honor its military related students at graduation.

In recognition of the support and service to the military of the United States of America, the college distributed red, white, and blue graduation cords at the Spring 2014 Commencement Services on  Friday, May 16, 2014.

All active duty, reserve, veteran,  spouse, and military dependent students from all branches of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and National Guard, were awarded a graduation cord to wear as a part of their regalia prior to the ceremony.

Mr. Curtis L. Coy, Deputy Under Secretary for Economic Opportunity, Veterans Benefit Administration, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, also wore one of the graduation cords as he delivered the commencement address. He congratulated the graduates and recognized the military-related students and their families in the audience, noting, "Out of the 44,000 who attend TCC, almost 14,000 of them have a relationship to the military."

Congratulations, Grads!!

Math Pre-Placement Program
CMVE Begins a Pilot Math Pre-Placement Program This Month math-teacher-chalkboard.jpg

The purpose of the program is to assist students in preparing for the math portion of the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) and improving their overall math skills.

The goal of the program is to give students the skills needed to test out of some or all of the Developmental Math (MTE) courses, increase overall math confidence, and save educational benefits.

Students participating in the program will have access to an online math program developed by the Monterrey Institute's National Repository of Online Courses (NROC).  The program will cover material from MTEs 1-9 and will include diagnostic tests, individualized learning plans, self-paced learning, and access to tutors on campus.

Program Details:

  • Choice between two six-week sessions available starting mid-June or early August
  • Open to all military related students (active duty, reserves, spouses, and dependents)
  • Students must NOT have taken any MTE courses
  • Students must NOT have taken the Virginia Math Placement Test more than once
