Meet TCC workstudy student and December graduate, Roshell Swann-Worthy
When Roshelle started at TCC in 2011, she was practically homeless - going from friend's house to friend's house, living out of her car. But when she decided to pursue her passion - her education, things started to turn around.
What program did you pursue at TCC?
At first I just wanted to get my Associates Degree in General Studies, until I became an intern at Thomas and Associates Law Firm. I worked under 20 attorneys who encouraged me to change my degree to Litigation, so I enrolled in the Legal Administration Program (Paralegal Studies). I always had a passion for studying law and while the program was a challenge, the long hours of studying and researching cases was worth it in the end. As a result I finished the Paralegal Program as well as General Studies, along with all with the certificates that came with it.
What is your connection to the military?
I am a dependent. My father Rick Vick retired from the NAVY in 1992.
Did this influence your decision to work at TCC CMVE?
I decided to apply for the work-study program in the Veterans Affairs Department at Tidewater Community College to serve the veterans by helping not only them but their love ones get into college. With the added benefit that it helps pay my tuition! But the job is bigger than just helping veterans get into school. We help them find homes, employment, along with going to the VA hospital to assist them with medical and dental care. This has been by far one of my best jobs.
You are graduating in December - what is your plan after graduating?
My plan is to complete undergrad school at Regent University and then go straight to law school. I am currently in my first semester at Regent to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Government with Pre- Law Emphasis. Never in a million years did I imagine that I would be a student at Regent University. But with faith and hard work everything will fall in place. Five years from now I plan to be working as a Prosecuting Attorney for a Prestigious Law Firm or a Judge on the Federal Level. Who knows what God has in store? But for now I am just enjoying the journey.
In what ways did CMVE help you achieve your educational or career goals?
CMVE is more than just a building full of random people. They are my family. The faculty, staff, and veterans have helped me achieve my educational and career goals tremendously. Each day someone is always asking me how my courses are coming along and making sure that I am studying so that I would not get distracted by all the curve balls that life throws at you. I have become more disciplined and mature while working at CMVE. I am forever thankful. Not everyone can say that they love their job but I can honestly say that I love mine. I look forward to coming to work every day to see my coworkers and chat for a while. Then off to what we do best - serve the VETERANS.
What advice do you have for other students looking to get their education?
My advice that I would give to other students that are attending and plan on attending college in the future is '' Never give up on your Dreams.'' Yes, it may be a challenge as a college student but here at Tidewater Community College there are so many people, resources, and leaders that are always ready to assist students on their journey from the beginning to the end. With that being said, "Put your pride aside and ask for help." The statement "From here go anyway" is very true. So step out in faith and invest in your future.
