Veterans Give to Local Elementary School
On September 9, TCC's VetSuccess Counselor and MAVSA (Military and Veterans Student Association) presented the staff at Birdneck Elementary with school supplies which were donated by military personel.
The community service project was put together by Carla Riggins, a military veteran herself, and was presented to the staff of Birdneck Elementary along with MAVSA President, Lisa Prahl and MAVSA Faculty Advisor, Tiffanny Putman.
Mr. Irvin Beard, the Principal at Birdneck Elementary School, along with his staff: Military and Family Life Counselor Sue Yoster, School Counselor Jennifer Carlson, and Staff Member Katelyn Connors were on hand to graciously receive the donated items.
Ms. Carlson commented that "many times it is assumed that military families are 'taken care of' and that the military offers anything and everything that is needed; however, we know this is not always true. School supplies are very expensive and our students, staff, and parents will be extremely grateful for your giving."
The donated items included over 170 boxes and bags containing a pair of scissors, 3 pencils, glue sticks, crayons and index cards. In addition, 9 book bags were also provided for the children. They contained the same items as the boxes but with the addition of two folders, two packs of loose leaf papers and a ruler.
Mr. Beard shared that 60% of the students at Birdneck Elementary are military dependents and the school was recently awarded a large, three year Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) grant for the Military Connected Academic and Support Program (MCASP). This program helps support the transitions and challenges associated with education and being a part of a military family. The grant provides provisions for both the social and emotional needs of the children while also focusing on academics through its STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) initiatives.
Mr. Beard went on to say that he was glad Ms. Riggins contacted him about this project and grateful to her and MAVSA for the items. "We are planning to give each new enrolling military student the school supplies and will also use them to provide for ongoing needs." He added that he is open to forming a working relationship with the student veteran organization to work with any of the veteran volunteers that have a true interest in serving the children in his school. "We always need help with our military family nights, carnival nights, bingo nights, reading program, etc. We hope we can work together with you guys in the future."
For more information about how you can get involved, contact: Carla Riggins VetSuccess Counselor 822-7239 Carla.Riggins@va.gov

On-The-Job & Apprenticeship Training
This program assists veterans and their dependents by
allowingthem to learn a trade or skill through participation in apprenticeship or on-the-job training rather than by attending classes.
One generally enters into a training contract for a specific period of time with an employer or union and at the end of the training period has gained job certification or journeyman status. In most instances one receives a salary from their employer or union while participating in training. As one progresses through training, their skill level increases and so does their salary. GI Bill payments are issued monthly after we receive certification of hours worked from the employer.
This type of training is not available to active duty servicepersons or spouses utilizing transferred entitlement.
What Type Of Training Can You Take? Examples of this type of training are:
- Union Plumber
- Hotel Management
- Firefighter
Payment AmountsWhile the participation requirements are the same for all GI Bill programs, the payment amount varies depending on the program you are utilizing. Find out more about this program and payment amounts on the VA Website.

Study finds that Associate Degree and Technical Certifications can earn students more than four year degrees.
According to a recent study, students who earn associate's degrees and technical certificates are often earning more their first year out of college than those with four year degrees. The studies showed that contrary to popular belief, what you study is more important than where you studied. While states funnel plenty of annual funding towards Flagship state Universities, the study argues that more funding should be put into communi

ty colleges, which are focused on more marketable degree and job-specific training.
In Texas, one of the five states studied, the study showed that technical associate's degree students earned about $11,000 more in their first year after graduation that those with four year degrees.
The study also showed that those with degrees in technology, engineering and math earned the most, with engineering topping the list. The study focused on students who remained in the state where they graduated, and did not track students who moved out of state after graduation.
So what does this mean for you? TCC CMVE can help you find a degree, certificate or training program that meets the needs of local employers. The flexibility of community colleges allows our programs to change with the demands of the market. Meet with your CMVE counselor today to discuss what program is right for your skills and today's marketplace.
