Greetings TCC Student!
The fall semester is about to begin and we want to make sure you're prepared to start the school year right. If you need any education or career counseling, advice, or even just want information about how to get involved in a social club, contact the CMVE. We are here for you year-round.
In this month's newsletter you'll find information about the upcoming Veteran's Symposium taking place on Tuesday, September 24th at the Virginia Beach Campus. This is a great opportunity to find out all the ways that TCC CMVE can help you reach your goals, use your benefits and find funding for college.
Also meet one of our wonderful work-study students, Jalina Jackson. Jackson is a 14 year veteran of the Navy and is working towards a business degree at TCC.
And as the "back to school" rush begins, help us help those kids who are less fortunate start the school year right as well with our School Supply Drive!
We hope you had a great summer, but we're excited to start a new semester of learning, growing and helping YOU achieve your goals!
Have a great TCC Day!
Sincerely,
TCC CMVE Staff

The DAV is a dedicated to empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity.
What the DAV does:
- Provide free, professional assistance to veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services earned through military service and provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other agencies of government
- Provide outreach concerning its program services to the American people generally, and to disabled veterans and their families specifically
- Represent the interests of disabled veterans, their families, their widowed spouses and their orphans before Congress, the White House and the Judicial Branch, as well as state and local government
- Extend DAV's mission of hope into the communities where these veterans and their families live through a network of state-level Departments and local Chapters; and
- Provide a structure through which disabled veterans can express their compassion for their fellow veterans through a variety of volunteer programs.
The DAV is available at rotating campuses on the First Friday of each month. The remaining Fridays will be at the Virginia Beach Campus.

Meet Jalina Jackson . . .
a 14 year Navy veteran and CMVE work study student.
What is your military backgroud? I am third generation Navy. I proudly served in the military for fourteen years. What did you do in the military? I was an IT2-Information Systems Technician Second Class Petty Officer. I worked on computer systems, repaired hardware, loaded software, managed networks, created accounts, and provided excellent customer service to several customers, military and civilian. What brought you to TCC? I wanted to become a better businesswoman. I have been a Mary Kay beauty consultant for seven years and I wanted to learn how to run a business more efficiently. I needed to obtain a degree that was quick, could transfer over to a four year college and was inexpensive. TCC has exactly what I need and I am very happy I am here. What is your program of study? I am in a dual degree program of Small Business Management and Business Administration. How did you hear about the work study program and why did you decide to do it? My classmate talked to me about what an incredible opportunity this program is. I wanted to give back and do my part to assist other veterans. I love to volunteer and even though I am given a financial compensation for my work, I would do my job for free. My reward comes from serving others. I love my job! How has TCC and the CMVE helped you reach your educational goals? My first 2 weeks working here at the campus, I received a free computer from the school. My supervisor asked me if I needed a new computer, she helped me fill out the form and two hours later I received the e-mail that my application was approved. My supervisor did not have to help me but she was willing to go the extra mile to assist me in every way. I have also received personal educational counseling from her, on more than one occasion. I now know that the CMVE office is always here for me. How has the military helped you reach your educational goals? Because of the military training and discipline I have received over the years, I am more focused and I follow through with my assignments more often. I have a plan and clear goals that I want to accomplish in a short amount of time. I am determined to finish my degree in two years. What are your long-term educational and career goals? My long-term educational goal is to obtain my MBA with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and my career goal is continue to work my business for as long as I possibly can. |
