June 14, 2016 Finger Lakes Connected
My favorite story about my father dates back to when I played softball. He was a terrific sportsman and went to all the games. I sent that first pitched ball soaring. It was a phenomenal hit!  I was rounding second and felt sure it was going to clear the fence. Then I heard an all too familiar voice yell out, "GREAT CATCH! WOW! WHAT A CATCH!" The outfielder on the opposing team somehow caught my home run ball and Dad leapt up to applaud her. I didn't talk to Dad for at least a week. I was young and a sore loser and felt his allegiance should have been to me! But, looking back, that's just how he was. He had a love for the game and a genuine sense of good tidings for all - no matter what 'team' they were on. In fact, I think he mostly went about his life feeling we were all on the same 'team'. He was a happy-go-lucky kind of guy who took each moment as it came without much worry or planning. Dad passed on Father's Day 2004.  We had just moved back here (exactly 12 years ago) so the kids could, ironically, get to know cousins and gran dparents better. It is bittersweet but thinking back to his "way" makes me smile, even through the teary eyes. Hug your father this week and tell him you love him or share a story about your father with others to keep the memory alive!
