May 10, 2016 Finger Lakes Connected
Thank you to all who came to our 7th Anniversary Party on The Lake Friday! After the rain cleared out and the sunshine (and yes, blue skies) emerged, it was perfect! I'm truly blessed to love what I do: connecting people and businesses is fun and rewarding "work". Thank you to all the advertisers who brought some great giveaways, The Roc Street Band for letting me use their sound system to MC the event and providing all the great music after, and Tickets A Plenty for the Kenny Chesney raffle. The Inn on the Lake's Sandbar is one of my favorite places and it is always fun to open it (and lake season) with our party! Cheers and THANK YOU for staying "Connected"!

Holocaust survivor gives free talk at FLCC May 12

Holocaust survivor Eva Abrams will give a talk at Finger Lakes Community College on Thursday, May 12.

The free, public event will commemorate Jewish Heritage Month. It begins at 12:45 p.m. in Room 2755 on the second floor of the FLCC main campus, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua. Visitors should arrive early for parking.

Abrams was born in Oradea, Romania in 1926 and was 17 when the Nazis occupied her hometown and sent her family into a ghetto. A month later, her family was deported to Auschwitz.

Abrams' parents and niece were sent into the gas chambers while she and two sisters were part of a group selected, four months after their arrival, to construct anti-tank ditches against the approaching Allied army. As the Allies drew closer, the surviving members of her work detail were death marched to Helmbrechts, Bavaria. Read more

It's all about the light

The Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival, coming this June, takes its name from the French term for "open air," as the artists set up their easels outside to paint works that will be judged and sold.

"By painting outside in the open air, an artist paints what the eye actually sees. Light, because of its changing nature, plays a crucial part in the paintings," explained Pat Rini Rohrer, a member of the committee organizing the festival. "Plein air paintings display more varied lighting than ones
painted indoors."

The festival also features opportunities for the public to meet the artists and watch them work as well as a Community Paint-Out, a painting competition for local residents with cash prizes.

Events run June 7-12. To get all the details, click here.

Is it a cold or allergies?
The first sneeze or sniffle prompts you to reach for a tissue. The second, third or fourth may send you to the pharmacy for medication, but what do you get?  It is probably a cold if you have a runny nose, coughing or sore throat, followed by fatigue and achiness. Colds are caused by a virus so expect symptoms lasting between 7 and 10 days.  It is probably allergies if your symptoms - sneezing, along with itchy eyes and nose, are more predictable and they wax and wane bit. Allergies are triggered by something in your environment such as pollen, pet dander, dust or even specific foods. Allergies can last for weeks or months at a time, depending on what is in bloom and in the air. Allergies may be more pronounced this year as the Finger Lakes region was named one of the 10 worst areas for allergies by the Allergy Foundation of America.
Over-the-counter medications can help with symptoms. When you chose medications read labels carefully and be aware that some ingredients can make you sleepy. While they may be effective, the drowsiness can impact your functioning during the day. If you drive a lot, work with heavy equipment, or are working in health care or childcare consider a non-drowsy medication. Stop by Canandaigua The Medicine Shoppe and let our knowledgeable pharmacists help you find the right medication to help you with allergies or colds. (585)396-9970
