November 10, 2015 CC ENewsletter

Calling all local photographers! While the CC website is being revamped, I got a great idea. Why not try to capture the heart, soul, character and beauty of ALL communities in our Finger Lakes area by showcasing the best photos from our local photographers? Please email me a few of your best for consideration by replying to this email and your photography studio or name will be highlighted in the caption for others to see when the new website is launched. This will be just in time for the holidays when people may want to purchase your depiction of our local scenery, wildlife, or main streets as gifts. Any high quality picture will work that captures local flavor. Maybe we pick 12 and make a 2016 Finger Lakes Connected Calendar out of it in addition to the website pics? I'm full of ideas tonight! Specifically, I'm looking for shots of Canandaigua, Naples, Geneva, Victor, Penn Yan and all surrounding towns and areas around and in between that make you go "ahhhh". How is that for descriptive? Deadline for high quality image submission is 5pm on Nov 14th, please and thank you!
Blue Skies,
Donna Bennett

Nov. 12 at FLCC: Tang, Cheez Whiz and Ever-Changing Food Industry
Finger Lakes Community College assistant professor Eileen "Izy" Grooms takes a look at what we are eating and its effects on our health in a talk Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. at the college's main campus.

"Tang, Cheez Whiz and the Ever-Changing Food Industry" focuses on processed food and its potential connection to the obesity epidemic and disease rate in the U.S. The talk is free and open to the public in Stage 14 on the second floor of the FLCC main campus at 3325 Marvin Sands Drive.

Grooms, a Victor resident, teaches courses in nutrition and anatomy and physiology. She will review changes in the food industry, particularly the effect of processed food. While it has contributed to an expanded workforce, made cooking easier and saved time, it has downsides as well. Read more

Everyone wants to be active and mobile, but you or a loved one may find it difficult to get around without wearing yourself out or worrying about falling. There are aids that give you greater independence and will allow you to do more without assistance from others. There are many aids on the market and they are designed to fit all kinds of life styles and budgets. Some aids are low tech and others are more advanced. Options include canes, walkers, and wheeled walkers (also known as rollators). If you are unsure what aid is best for your needs ask your doctor or occupational therapist for advice.

Here are some tips to help answer the question:
If you can walk by yourself but want extra support consider a cane.
If you can walk by yourself, but need to avoid putting too much pressure on your leg or foot consider crutches.
If you can walk by yourself but need a wider base of support than a cane provides consider a standard walker.
If you can walk by yourself but get tired on longer walks and cannot lift or move a walker forward, consider a rollator.

If you are in need of any of these mobility aids stop into Canandaigua The Medicine Shoppe and ask our knowledgeable staff about getting the right piece of equipment to get you back into the swing of daily living.
