Sept 8, 2015 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

The day has come. The kids are going back to school. Each summer, I learn to let things go and to just go with the flow a little bit more.  For this I am grateful. September is always a rejuvenating month. Winds of change replace the frazzled feeling with routine and organization and a sense of "ahhhhh". Enjoy!

Blue Skies,

Donna Bennett

Women's advocates launch George M. Ewing  series at FLCC
Rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was so prevalent there wasn't even a word for it in 2001 when radio journalist Chouchou Namegabe took to the airwaves with graphic survivor testimonies.
Namegabe's reports outraged many in her homeland in central Africa. But the anger was overshadowed by those who were empowered by the voice they found through her. Days after her first report aired, three rape victims, limping in pain, showed up at her station - terrified but desperate to share their stories.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, Namegabe will visit Finger Lakes Community College to share the stage with another global advocate for women, Alyse Nelson. Their talk, titled "Women's Rights Worldwide: Progress, Backlash & Prospects," launches the fifth season of the George M. Ewing Canandaigua Forum. The event begins at 4 p.m. in the FLCC Student Center auditorium, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua.

Inspire Moore Celebration!
Enjoy an afternoon of friends, food, cheers and great music on Sun, Sept 20, 12-5pm. We will be celebrating the hugely positive impact Diane and Tim Moore and Inspire Moore Winery have had on Naples and the surrounding community for close to 10 years.

As Tim and Diane continue the next leg of their journey to clear Tim of cancer, they are traveling to Allentown PA 1-4 times a month over the next year for an innovative treatment for Tim. To support our friends as they make these long trips to PA, we could think of no better way than get together, have fun and raise a little cash for their travel expenses.

Grove Brothers will be offering delicious BBQ. Wine/beer from local wineries/microbreweries. Live music from Out of the Blue from 1-4pm. A silent auction/raffle and a 50-50 raffle. Drawings will take place at 4:30 PM. Tickets are $5 each and you may purchase as many as you wish. One ticket will get you one of the following:  a plate of BBQ, or a glass of wine or beer, or enter any of the silent auction items or 10 chances for the 50-50 raffle.

Keep Drugs Cool! All medications are sensitive to temperature, whether you take antidepressants or over-the counter pain relievers. (They can lose potency and become less effective). Most drugs should be stored at room temperature which is 68 F to 77 F. This is the temperature that you are most likely to be comfortable in as well, so it is easy to gauge.  If you are running errands, make the drugstore the last shop before you head home, and once indoors, don't put pills in the bathroom medicine cabinet because the steamy shower can turn up the heat. Try a kitchen cabinet away from the stove or a drawer in the office area. Practicing safe storage makes your medications work for you.
