May 26, 2015 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

I just love kicking off the summer celebrating Memorial Day. I asked the kids around us at the parade if they knew the day meant more than the candy they were collecting.  My daughter's (10 year old) friend said very proudly, "Its about the fallen soldiers and how they died for our freedom." Heartwarming. Faith restored. Then mine chimed in with, "That...and the candy!" Smh (shaking my head) but she's always been the class clown type.

Well, we had a perfect weather weekend and it was a great welcome for June. Enjoy this week's CC!

FLCC cuts tuition for summer basic skills classes

Finger Lakes Community College has cut tuition by more than 60 percent for summer classes designed to strengthen new students' reading, writing and math skills in preparation for college work.

Tuition for developmental studies in math and a combined reading and writing course will be reduced. Costs for most classes will drop from $501 to $195, including fees.

This summer, FLCC is offering a total of 24 developmental studies classes at the main campus; campus centers in Geneva, Newark and Victor and online. Summer classes are held for about four weeks; FLCC has three summer sessions running from May 26 to June 19, June 22 to July 16, and July 20 to Aug. 13.

Details about these summer courses are available online at www.flcc.edu/dst. For questions about registration, contact the One Stop Center at (585) 785-1000.

FLCC piloted the reduced tuition program last year, and Deborah A. Cochran of Victor was among the first to sign up.

Why we put up with winter....

Winter in upstate New York may be no picnic but summer here always is. In June, you can view our gorgeous Finger Lakes scenery in a new way: through the eyes of more than 40 visiting professional artists.

The Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival, sponsored in part by the Ontario County Arts Council, takes its name from the French term for "open air," as the artists set up their easels outside to paint works that will be judged and sold. The festival also features opportunities for the public to meet the artists and watch them work as well as a Community Paint-Out, a painting competition for local residents with cash prizes.

Events run June 7-17. Some are free; others are ticketed events with the artists. A "palette pass" at $150 per person or $300 per couple gives full access to all events, including a gala preview on June 13 and breakfast with the artists on June 14.  To get all the details, click here.
