May 12, 2015 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

I have three school aged children. What happens in the schools is important to me. Even if you do not have children in the system, it is your tax paying dollars hard at work. Not a taxpayer? Your community is shaped by the children who graduate and become citizens here. I interviewed both candidates and here are the highlights for the May 19th open school board seat vote (in order of the interviews).

John McGuire - A family physician with Thompson Health, John is currently the president of their medical staff. He served in the U.S. Air Force and on various local boards to benefit the community. He has two daughters who attend Canandaigua Academy. "I believe that a school board should be comprised of individuals with various backgrounds and experiences. I like to analyze issues from all different angles to take conflicting information and come out with educated decisions. I appreciate and applaud success, but realize at times we can learn even more from our setbacks. We must always strive for improvement and the status quo should always be challenged."

Cheryl Birx - A retired Canandaigua Academy teacher (31 years), Cheryl also served as president of the Canandaigua Teachers Association for 14 years. She served on numerous committees and held advisory and booster club positions. She has two daughters who graduated from Canandaigua schools. "As CTA president, I negotiated contracts and worked with district administrators during difficult financial times.  The history that I have with the district gives me the ability to contribute immediately when making decisions because I know where we have been and where we plan to go.  I will use my experience working with administrators, staff, Board members and the community to continue to provide a quality education for our students, which will improve our community."
