April 14, 2015 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

I consider myself a good parent. Perfect? No. But, I try my best and a lot of heart and soul goes into it.  I think discipline is easier when they're 2 and more challenging when they are 11. And, as much as I'm NOT a fan of overuse of cell phones, it sure makes discipline easier when you take the phone away. Suddenly, they are listening. I'm trying to think back to my preteen years. What on earth was as precious to me as the cell phones are now to kids? The first thing that comes to mind for me is my bike. Oh, wait...my diary! But, that would be hands off in a discipline situation, wouldn't it?  I was also quite addicted to watching MTV, when they actually played music videos 24/7.  What would you not be able to live without as a middle school student back in your day?

CIEE is seeking host families for high school students for the upcoming 2015-16 school year in Canandaigua and the surrounding school systems. Hosting a CIEE exchange student opens your and your children's hearts and minds, and sparks a hunger for learning about the world.  You will act as part parent, part cultural ambassador, and part mentor.  Your life will be touched and changed as much as your student's, and the bonds you create with these students will last a lifetime.  Email Local Coordinator Emma Fritz for more information or click here to fill out an application.

Blue Devils versus Braves? You can help!

The Town of Canandaigua is collecting non-perishables for a local food pantry.  Donations of canned goods, paper products, and personal care items can be dropped off at Town Hall thru Tuesday, April 14th.  We are also collecting donations at the transfer station (town dump) this Saturday & Sunday.  Would you please consider asking your co-workers, family and friends to donate?  In addition to helping the community there is a challenge between Jack Marren, Victor Supervisor and Chairman of the OCBOS and our very own Pam Helming.  If Victor collects more canned goods than Canandaigua, she has to wear a Victor Blue Devils athletic jersey to an Ontario County Board of Supervisors meeting and a Town Board meeting.  PLEASE HELP!  Jack Marren would look better in a Canandaigua jersey than she would look in Victor colors!
