February 3, 2015 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

Does anyone else think they have the folklore wrong? If the groundhog sees its shadow, wouldn't that mean the sun was shining and maybe more sun means that winter will come to a close? Groundhog + Shadow (sun) = Spring and, conversely, Groundhog + No Shadow (no sun) = 6 more weeks of Winter.  I don't know, maybe I'm missing my Algebra Teacher days? Folklore actually says if he sees his shadow, he scurries back into his burrow for more winter is on it's way. Who ever said that groundhogs are timid little things that scare easily? Maybe they're proud to see that shadow and bask in it's glory?  HMMMM. I apparently like to question things that don't make sense. Enjoy whatever is left of winter...
