December 30, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

It isn't easy having kids who don't like veggies. Especially because I am very into health and nutrition. Did I ruin my oldest when I gave her avocado as her first baby food?  She LOVED it by the way but now I think I'd have to bribe her to eat even a sliver. My youngest actually wrote "eat a brussel sprout" as one of her 2014 New Year's Resolutions (to please me, I'm sure, as the youngest still likes to be in my favor from time to time).  Let's just say there is still time on the brussel sprout thing! I'm thinking I can find a way to sneak it in somewhere in the next two days.  Sometimes parenting ideas don't pan out. My refusal to buy junk food has officially backfired.  You would agree if you saw them at friends' houses when junk food is out in the open. You'd think they were marooned on a desert island and never saw food before.  I will have to find a way to address this in my 2015 resolutions. Maybe perhaps a simple "LET IT GO" would do? Happy and HEALTHY 2015, everyone!

Blue Skies, Donna Bennett

FLCC's Secret to Finding You a Job

In early 2015, Finger Lakes Community College will hold three short-term training programs that teach high-demand advanced manufacturing skills. The college worked closely with employers to ensure students had skills those employers wanted in new hires. To date, most graduates of FLCC advanced manufacturing programs have had job offers even before finishing the program.  Graduates have ranged in age from those recently out of high school to workers over 50.

Anyone looking for a steady job or a career change is invited to a free information session on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the FLCC main campus, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive. The morning session runs 9 to 11 a.m.; the evening session runs 6 to 8 p.m. Space is limited. Reserve a seat at (585) 785-1906.

The three programs are as follows:

ˇ         Mechatronics Technology, a 12-week class in mechanical and electrical skills, starting Feb. 16 in Victor.

ˇ         Advanced Manufacturing Operator, a 12-week class in manufacturing fundamentals, starting March 2 at FLCC in Canandaigua.

ˇ         Advanced Manufacturing Machinist, a six-month course in high-level machining, starting March 16 at ITT Goulds Pumps in Seneca Falls.

Wish Program Benefits from Calendar Sale
The M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center was chosen from among nearly 100 submissions to be featured in the 2015 Caring Canines calendar, highlighting animals that live and work in long-term care facilities around the country.

Smokey the cat appears in the calendar and is shown visiting a resident of M.M. Ewing who was receiving end-of-life care and wished to spend time with cats. Smokey and other animals in the calendar show the roles dogs and cats play as companions, mood elevators, physical therapy aids, memory triggers, and friends for the elderly residing in long-term care facilities nationwide.  A limited number of copies are available at the front desk of M.M. Ewing, at 350 Parrish St. in Canandaigua, in return for a $15 donation to the Sharon M. Pepper Wish Upon a Star program. To learn more about the program, click here.
