November 11, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

In honor of the Veteran's Day holiday, my three kids (13, 11, & 9) will learn all the states and capitals.  At noon today, they'll each get a blank USA map and a pencil. 5 points for each correct state, 2 points for each capital, and 1 point deduction for each spelling error.  I told them after school on Friday of this Veteran's Day Challenge idea and that I'd take the winner to Peach's Frozen Yogurt. They've been cramming all weekend...even studying together! I'm counting this as a smart mom victory already because I have had a record low number of referee gigs this school break! One child thought it best that they each get to go to Peach's, regardless of the results. Some of you know my answer, right? Something tells me that if I took away the competition factor, they would not be so motivated like this to learn!  Every time we would go to a restaurant, my dad used to have each of us children guess the total on the check and the closest got $1, -  not each of us, just the closest.  The kids know most of these, but to label a blank map (and spell correctly) is a bit more of a challenge (even for us adults).  Also, I really think the youngest child has this in the bag. We shall see. Thank you to all the Veterans...feeling grateful, from sea to shining sea!

Blue Skies,

Donna Bennett

Abstract 'men' of steel in new FLCC exhibit

John Nihart's welded steel sculptures are inspired by the human figure, but the connection isn't always obvious at first.

"They are very abstract interpretations," said Nihart. "Certain elements of my sculptures represent anatomical forms such as the head, ribs and torso."

He'll discuss this and other elements of his work during a talk at Finger Lakes Community College at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13. It launches an exhibit of his work in the college's Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34. The opening for "Enigmatic Imagery: The Sculpture of John Nihart" runs from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a reception from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

The gallery is located on the first floor of the main campus, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua. All events are free.
