Oct 14, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

On this Columbus Day, I am reminded of the courageous expedition into unchartered territory that gave us all the land we call home of the free and the brave.  I am also reminded of my mother who passed away this week as she embarked on a journey of her own into a New World of sorts. The thing about any act of bravery is that it can be quite scary but what is on the other side makes it worthwhile and is often sweeter than the security of what was left behind.

Please join me at the 5th Annual Halloween Fundraiser for The Serenity House, which we were privileged to call Mom's home for the past two and a half months.  It is a

Comfort Care Home for the terminally ill in Victor and the funds are used for maintaining the house and caring for the patients.  This is always a fun event (yes, costumes are encouraged).  There is music, dancing, silent auction, cash bar/food....$10 tickets are available at all the CNB branches in Canandaigua, Victor, Shortsville, Farmington, and Bloomfield! $15 at the door.

This year's event is at the Inn on the Lake, Fri, Oct 24, 5-8pm with a costume party after featuring the talent of Roc City and John Carter!  PS Each $10 ticket gets you entered to win the Mirbeau Inn and Spa Grand Prize giveaway (you don't have to be present to win)! So even if you cannot go, please consider buying a ticket to support the cause and enter to win.  Details below.

The Canandaigua Primary-Elementary will be hosting its first Screen Free Challenge this fall Oct 6-10. All students, faculty, and their families are encouraged to turn off all leisure related "screen time" and get active or do something else that you love! Screen time describes anything where you are sitting in front of a screen (tv, iPad, smartphones, video games, etc). To celebrate all those that gave this challenge a try-those who completed one day to those who completed the whole week without screens-we are partnering with the YMCA to host a Screen Free Family Fun night on Fri, Oct 17. Local businesses have been generous to give donations as prizes for those who have given the Screen Free Week a try. The more days a student or faculty member is screen free, the more chances they will have to win a phenomenal prize!  So if your student or family member is a part of the Canandaigua Primary-Elementary, join them in this healthy break from screens! For more info, please call Alissa Clark at the Canandaigua Primary-Elementary at 396-3900 ext 6328 or email.

Do you know an FLCC scholarship recipient?

Finger Lakes Community College recognized dozens of student scholarship winners and their benefactors during the 30th Annual Constellation Brands Honors Dinner in September.

More than 100 students received a total of $107,685 in private scholarships this year through the FLCC Foundation, a private not-for-profit that supports college activities. The privately funded FLCC Foundation scholarships are presented to part- and full-time students entering or returning to FLCC this fall or those who transferred to four-year colleges and universities. Students apply for and are selected to receive the awards based on a variety of criteria relating to major, grade point average and intended occupation. The awards range from $160 to full tuition, currently $4,022 per year.

Just prior to the honors dinner, a brief ceremony marked the naming of the Sands Family Constellation Brands Student Lounge on the second floor of the FLCC Student Center. The dedication recognizes the Sands Family Foundation's contribution of $500,000 to the Student Center, which was completed in early 2012. College President Barbara Risser offered remarks and unveiled a sign with the help of two student leaders, Student Corp. President Rory Edmonds and Student Trustee Gabby Wilkins.
