Oct 7, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter
Every year, I organize a fundraiser around Halloween time for a local cause. Please consider attending the 5th Annual Halloween FUNdraiser for The Serenity House (comfort care home for the terminally ill). I'm personally tied this year to this event because my mother is currently one of the two residents. I see first hand the dedication the volunteers and staff have to help families through this trying time. Although I'm painting a somber picture now, I must say this event is always such fun because of the Halloween theme (yes, costumes are encouraged), the music, dancing, silent auction, cash bar/food....$10 tickets are available at all the CNB branches in Canandaigua, Victor, Shortsville, Farmington, and Bloomfield! $15 at the door.
This year's event is at the Inn on the Lake, Fri, Oct 24, 5-8pm with a costume party after! PS Each $10 ticket gets you entered to win the Mirbeau Inn and Spa Grand Prize giveaway (you don't have to be present to win)! So even if you cannot go, please consider buying a ticket to support the cause and enter to win. Details below.

Get the basics at FLCC, too.
Finger Lakes Community College offers more than two-year college courses. It also has programs to help people who never finished high school get their diploma and newcomers to the U.S. who want to improve their English skills.
The college offers local residents, age 17 and older, day and evening classes to prepare for the state high school equivalency exam. The exam, called the Test Assessing Secondary Completion, or TASC, replaced the exam for the former general equivalency diploma, or GED, and corresponds to the new Common Core standards now being followed at K-12 schools.
At FLCC, the class size for TASC preparation is small. Work is self-paced, meaning students can work with an instructor on the skills they need most. Students will learn test-taking strategies and take practice exams. All classes are free of charge.

FLCC also offers day and evening classes in Geneva to help speakers of other languages improve their English skills. For information, call the FLCC Adult Basic Education Program Office at (585) 785-1431, 585-785-1544 or the Geneva Literacy Office at (315) 789-6701, ext. 6023.

The Canandaigua Primary-Elementary will be hosting its first Screen Free Challenge this fall Oct 6-10. All students, faculty, and their families are encouraged to turn off all leisure related "screen time" and get active or do something else that you love! Screen time describes anything where you are sitting in front of a screen (tv, iPad, smartphones, video games, etc). To celebrate all those that gave this challenge a try-those who completed one day to those who completed the whole week without screens-we are partnering with the YMCA to host a Screen Free Family Fun night on Fri, Oct 17. Local businesses have been generous to give donations as prizes for those who have given the Screen Free Week a try. The more days a student or faculty member is screen free, the more chances they will have to win a phenomenal prize! So if your student or family member is a part of the Canandaigua Primary-Elementary, join them in this healthy break from screens! For more info, please call Alissa Clark at the Canandaigua Primary-Elementary at 396-3900 ext 6328 or email.
