Sept 9, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

People often ask me why I'm always smiling. Some have even suggested that maybe bad things never happen to me.  Let me put all of this in perspective....

Have you ever watched someone struggle with the simple act of lifting a leg? Or even speaking? When brushing one's teeth is so exhausting that one has to lie down afterwards, then you suddenly realize that yes, every living moment should be cherished.  Even when seemingly "bad" things happen to us, aren't we still incredibly lucky to have woken up, to have jumped out of bed freely and easily, and gone about our day? My mother is the person struggling.  She is at the wonderful hospice home in Victor called the Serenity House where staff and volunteers give of themselves like I've never witnessed. Every year, I organize a fundraiser for a local non-profit and this year it will be for The Serenity House. Details to follow, of course, but PLEASE mark your calendars for Fri, Oct 24th, 5pm-8pm, at the Inn on the Lake. Lets call it a celebration of LIFE! After all, it is fleeting. PS Halloween Costumes (even if it is just a fun hat) are suggested. Silent Auction, Music, Dancing, Cash Bar, and more. Please email me back if you can donate a gift certificate, basket, or item you think people would be excited to bid on!

Still Smiling, Donna Bennett

Know someone looking for a new direction?

A few seats remain in the new Finger Lakes Community College 12-week program that prepares people for jobs in the expanding advanced manufacturing sector. The program, called mechatronic technology, was developed in cooperation with several local manufacturers that cannot find workers with the right skills to fill vacant jobs.

Classes run daily from Sept. 15 to Dec. 12 at the Technical Career Training Institute (TCTI), 7424 Victor Mendon Road (Route 251) in Victor. At the end of the program, graduates have an opportunity to meet with employers. Advanced manufacturing is unlike traditional manufacturing of years ago. Today's shops are clean and air-conditioned to accommodate computer-controlled machinery. Work is done by teams - not long assembly lines.

Students will study measurement, mechanical fundamentals, blueprint reading and basic electrical schematics. The program also includes necessary training for national industry certifications in electronics assembly and soldering.

If you think this is for you - or someone you know - contact Andrea Badger at FLCC at please email or call (585) 785-1906 before Sept. 11.
