July 22, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter
Did you ever notice that much of life is a learning curve? It takes me about half the summer to get into Summer Mode. Then, when I finally have it down perfectly where it is all flowing smoothly, it is time to go back to School Mode with a new routine to relearn. So, what's the answer? I think the approach I'm going to take is to just let it go. Give in to the craziness. Like today, for instance...
Child: Mom, I don't have any underwear in my drawers!
Me: Did you check the guest room (stationing area) where all the clean laundry is in a gargantuan pile/holding pattern awaiting it's next destination?
Child (old enough for this task): What? Yes, but the pile is so big that it is hard to find small stuff like socks and underwear.
Me: Is it worth the effort? I'd say so.
I know, I know. I could try to do it all but then something else gives like the food situation. One can only spend so long in the kitchen or at Wegmans preparing for the kitchen stuff. So, this summer, they can search for the needle (underwear) in the haystack and be fed well. Done! Happy Mom, Happy House. Ps The child's real name was not used in the above scenario to protect the identity of said child's very probable commando status.
Blue skies, Donna Bennett

Three misconceptions about going back to school Finger Lakes Community College will offer an Adult Learner Open House on Thursday, July 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Victor Campus Center off Route 251 to show people above the traditional ages of 18 or 20 how they can best enter or re-enter higher education.Don't let these common misconceptions stop you: I won't fit in because everyone else is a teenager. Fact: Older students are a minority but a sizable one. In fall 2013, 25 percent of all full-time FLCC students were 25 or older; 30 percent of all part-time students were 25 or older. I don't have a high school diploma, only a GED. Fact: A GED is a high school diploma and is treated equally when you enroll. It doesn't matter what your grades were. In fact, community college is a "second chance" for people whose high school work would make it hard to get into a four-year school. My previous college work won't count. Fact: Always tell admissions counselors about previous college work. If you have previous college credits, FLCC can check to see if they will transfer. And, FLCC only transfers credits, not grades, so you actually start over with a clean GPA slate. To learn more or sign up for the open house, go to www.flcc.edu/visit or call (585)785-1278. |
