July 15, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter
Sam (my 10 year old): Mom, what are we doing Friday?
Me: It's Monday and I haven't gotten it all pulled together for today yet. Live in the moment.
Sam: Um, okay (eyes rolling at my zen comment). But what are we doing Friday?
Me: Can I get back to you Thursday night? Or maybe even Friday morning?
It may truly just be me, but I really am better with the whole summer vacation thing when I just go day by day. I like to get up, look at the calendar, the weather, check all impending emergencies or crises (whether real or dramatized), see what I need to accomplish with my stuff, and then make a game day type judgment call. My other kids get this about me but let me just defer you to the end of yesterday's conversation with Sam to explain that it may take more time for this to set in with him. (And I will not be surprised if this amount of time ends up being the rest of the summer.)
Sam: Okay, well what about the weekend? What is the exact plan for the weekend?
Donna: Exact plan? Wake up, see what the day entails, and go with the flow. Repeat.
Did I mention I have a great respect for the teachers? And, yes, I know before I know it the kids will be packing for college. Enjoy this week's CC and all the moments of each day as I will try to do.
Blue skies, Donna Bennett

Congrats to these 919 folks:
FLCC recently celebrated the achievement of 115 people who received their high school equivalency diplomas over the past year through the college's classes.
Most received a GED, or general equivalency diploma, but that program ended in December 2013. It was replaced by the Test Assessing Secondary Completion, or TASC, in January. Some of June's FLCC graduates had already passed the new TASC, which is based on the Common Core standards now used in K-12 schools.
FLCC offers TASC classes at various locations in Canandaigua, Victor, Geneva, Lyons, Newark, Penn Yan, Sodus and Wolcott. For the schedule, call (585) 785-1431 or 785-1544 or go online by clicking here.
Read about the ceremony and see photos and a list of graduates' names here.
FLCC has also recently announced the spring semester dean's list, which features 804 full- and part-time students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher. To view the names, which are listed online by county and town, click here. |

"Change Your Body - Change Your Lifestyle"
If you have had weight loss surgery or are considering it, you're invited to attend a fitness and nutrition program on Wednesday, Aug. 6, in Thompson Hospital's Constellation Center for Health and Healing. "Change Your Body - Change Your Lifestyle" is designed to fit in with individual goals for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and weight loss. When you register, you will be assigned to a group, dependent on your personal status (pre- or post-surgery). A Thompson athletic trainer will help you develop an exercise plan, while a Thompson registered dietitian will identify correct serving sizes of meal components consistent with the Highland Bariatric Center Lifestyle Meal Plan, and guide you in having a better understanding of Bariatric Center Lifestyle habits. The fee is $40 per person, and space is limited. To register, click here.
