June 10, 2014 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

Father's Day is always bittersweet for me because my father is a memory now. Ten years ago (on Father's Day, 2004) he passed.  Always smiling, jovial, making other people laugh (quite often at his expense), he was a rare gem. I gave the eulogy through very teary eyes because ironically we had just moved back to New York so the kids (only 2 of them, then) could get to know their grandparents and cousins better. He wasn't a success by monetary standards - in fact, he quite often played hooky to take us to Roseland Park to watch us ride the Skyliner, Golden Nugget or Scrambler countless times in a row. I think he just simply enjoyed that more than work.  He never missed an opportunity to (from the heart) say "I love you".  Do you really take money with you when you die, anyway? I think it is the memories you carry inside that matter more. And, of course, that essence that you leave behind uplifts others for generations more than money could. This Father's Day, make a memory. Do something fun with Dad (or in his spirit) and speak from the heart!

Blue skies, Donna Bennett
