Camerata singers celebrate 'Earth, Air, Fire, Water' May 3, 4

The Finger Lakes Camerata, a choral group based at Finger Lakes Community College, will give two concerts for the community the weekend of May 3 and 4.

The performance will be staged first on Saturday, May 3, at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The concert will be repeated on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 149 Genesee St., Geneva.

Dennis Maxfield, FLCC adjunct music instructor and director of the Finger Lakes Camerata, titled the performance "Earth, Air, Fire, Water" and selected 15 pieces that fit the theme of the four elements.

For example, Earth is celebrated with songs such as "For the Beauty of the Earth" by John Rutter and "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie. Soloist Emily Philips sings of the air in "The Blue Bird" by Charles Villers Stanford. For the water theme, Maxfield selected "Deep River" by Matthew Culloton and a version of "At the River" adapted by Aaron Copland. An arrangement by Alan Billingsley called "I Walk the Line: The Music of Johnny Cash" is one of three songs representing the theme of fire.

Ines Draskovic, FLCC associate professor of music, will serve as accompanist for the Finger Lakes Camerata. Performances are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted for the Dr. A. John Walker Award for FLCC music and music recording students.
