Claude Bragdon: Meet the Architect Behind the Building on April 30
Learn about the Ontario County Historical Museum's rich history on April 30. The Georgian Revival style building at 55 North Main Street was built 100 years ago as one of the few buildings in New York State originally designed for use as a museum. Wood Library was also originally housed in the museum. The architect behind the construction of the building was Claude Bragdon, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, who designed several important buildings in Rochester including the Rochester Railroad Station, the First Universalist Church, Maplewood Branch YMCA, several police precinct buildings and the Rochester Chamber of Commerce.
Find out about the man who integrated architecture, art, and design with his philosophical beliefs. On Wednesday, April 30 from 7-9pm the Ontario County Historical Society is hosting Claude Bragdon: The Man Behind the Building. Bragdon "himself" will tell his story followed by Andrea Reithmayr, Special Collections Librarian and Curator of the Bragdon Family Papers, who will speak about this remarkable architect who left a local legacy. The book Claude Bragdon and the Beautiful Necessity (RIT Press) will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public and includes a tour of the museum and refreshments. For more information, please visit www.ochs.org or call (585) 394-4975.
